Hiking it to Aguas Turbias

A group of the territorial volunteers visited the boundary marker at Aguas Turbias early this morning. The reconnaissance mission is in preparation for a large expedition planned for April thirtieth by the Belize Territorial Volunteers. The monument marks the boundary for Belize, Mexico and Guatemala. It is Belize’s northernmost boundary with Guatemala and where the boundary with Mexico starts.  On April thirtieth 1859, the Convention between Britain and Guatemala, relative to the boundaries of British Honduras, was signed. This boundary is more desolate than Jalacte and required four kilometers of hiking each way. The group, led by Orlando De La Fuente encountered Belizean and Guatemalan forces. One Lieutenant Shal told De La Fuente that the joint patrols were routine and helped to build confidence and maintain open lines of communication between the military of Belize and Guatemala. The Aguas Turbias Monument has brass plates with names of both Mexico and Guatemala. Belize was not listed on the monument but someone etched in the name of the country with pencil says De La Fuente.
