Foreign Affairs Minister questions Opposition Leader’s moral standing

And while Belize plays the waiting game and Foreign Minister Elrington is not predicting Guatemala’s next move, he is absolutely clear in his view of Leader of the Opposition, Francis Fonseca, and the People’s United Party. In a press conference Monday evening, Fonseca said Elrington was doing a disservice to Belize and should be removed. Today, Elrington gave as good as he got in the political war of words, but said that he doesn’t only talk the talk, he has walked the walk.

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

Wilfred Elrington

“I also heard him say it but he did not give any explanation; he did not explain why he came to that conclusion. It was just a statement and you know there are people like the COLA and others who have been saying that. So I imagine he is also influenced by COLA. But I don’t know if you know Spanish. You know what COLA means in Spanish. I don’t think it is time for the tail to walk the dog; the dog has got to wag the tail.  If he had given some evidence or indication as to why he came to that conclusion, I probably would have given it more thought. I think that our position in relation to this matter has been very clearly thought and very resolutely held to as opposed to the People’s United Party who are still consulting as to whether or not it is the right decision to go to the ICJ. We made that decision long ago; I personally articulated my position on that long ago, the Cabinet took a vote on it, the party took a decision on it and we say we will go. His party hasn’t said yet whether they will go or not. So I don’t think he has the moral authority to pass any comment about me. He has not, in my view, demonstrated the kind of leadership that would qualify him to do that. He did not explain why he said that. And we have seen that because of the position that we have taken, it is the Guatemalans now who are looking to back out; not us. So clearly what we are doing and have been doing cannot be wrong because it is the Guatemalans now who are blinking; not us. So if it is on the basis of my performance on dealing with this issue, then his comments make no sense because we are not in a weaker position today; we are in a position of strength. We are not looking to back out.”

Let me respectfully tell Honorable Elrington: WE THE BELIZEAN PEOPLE DO NOT TRUST YOU ANYMORE. WE HAVE LOST ALL CONFIDENCE IN YOU. YOU NO MORE ENJOY OUR CONFIDENCE. WHAT PART OF IT DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND. LET ME TELL YOU WHY: SOMETIMES YOU SAY THINGS THAT SHOW YOU HAVE NO IDEA OF WHAT YOU TALKING ABOUT. YOU WANT AN EXAMPLE. THE OTHER DAY YOU SAID: THERE ARE NO BORDERS IN HEAVEN AND THAT GOD DOES NOT SET BORDERS. THIS SHOWS IGNORANCE. . YOU SIR TALK ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF GOING SOLO WITH THE REFERENDUM. NOW THAT IS ONE OF GUATEMALA,S PROPOSAL. I WONDER IF GUATEMALA DID NOT PICKED THAT IDEA FROM YOU. THESE ARE ONLY TWO EXAMPLES OF THE MANY INSTANCES WHEN YOU HAVE PUT YOUR FOOT IN YOUR MOUTH. THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION IS ONLY VOICING OUR DEMAND: SIR PLEASE SAVE THE LITTLE HONOR YOUR NAME STLL HAVE AND JUST GO. WE DO NOT WANT YOU AS OUR FOREIGN AFFAIR LEAD-MAN.

  4. Storm says:

I find it embarrassing that our Attorney General / Foreign Minister [how is one man able to perform two such important portfolios simultaneously, and do both of them competently?] lowers himself to schoolyard name-calling of a political rival and critic.

He is supposed to serve ALL Belizeans, UDP, PUP, and independents, and his gutter approach to politics demeans his office and the government — and us, since he is our voice to the world.

Better he shut his mouth and work on mattes of state — and law enforcement, like ending violence and corruption.

  5. Initiate says:

    Nice Tarasbulba

Don’t let the opposition undermine your strength Sedi! Keep the main thing the main thing

  6. Think-About-It says:

    Well said, Storm.
