Former British Prime Minister advised that surrender cayes to Guatemala to settle dispute

Former British Prime Minister, Baroness Margaret Thatcher, passed away earlier today at age eighty-seven after suffering a stroke. This morning, the current prime minister, David Cameroon, called her the greatest prime minister who not only served but saved her country.  According to her family, Thatcher has been battling several illnesses as well as dementia for some years. Thatcher became Prime Minister of Britain in 1979 and held the post until 1990, becoming not only the first and only female Prime Minister to this date; but the longest serving prime minister in the twentieth century in Britain’s history. But for our historical perspective we came across a document, a briefing paper from the US State Department which predates Belize’s independence. In it the State Department discusses the Caribbean and Central America. The document underpins the relations between Thatcher and the then President Reagan. In respect of Belize it says that the United Kingdom, at the time, was interested in ending the financial burden to its remaining colonies and had determined to grant independence to Belize. The briefing notes also mentions that the US was to urge Thatcher to “advise the Belizeans to seriously consider ceding some minor cayes to Guatemala if that is what is required to reach a successful overall settlement of the dispute, and encourage the British to provide a post-independence security guarantee in Belize.”

It might have been a useful idea at the time, but that ship sailed long ago. And the Guats want much more than a few minor cays!

  5. BmpResident says:

Its the British that owes Guatemala, not Belize. They promised and signed on stuff to compensate. Why doesn’t Guatemala take the British to court? I guess they pick someone smaller. They are bullies.

  6. Tarasbulba says:

Then the Americans say to the world that, “They don’t settle with Terrorists”. Not calling Mexico a Terrorist Country but, America didn’t settle with Mexico at the battle of “Chapultepec”, they just took away Mexican land and call it their own. Well, BELIZE DA FU WE and damn dih rest. Mek dem stop talk backside. Now it can be told, we wa defend Belize even if da wid Sling Shot an Broken Pot.

  7. BmpResident says:

There is talk that the President is calling on the Military Reserves (Kaibiles). Government needs to stand firm and get back the British with helicopters to man our borders along with our BDF and volunteers

  8. Belizean Boy says:

Everyone ranting and raving about this document but fail to realize that at THAT TIME, Belize was under British rule and as prime minister she was likely only looking to reduce Britain’s burden. Make no mistake, I am not saying to give ANYTHING to Guatemala! What I am saying is that at the time she was doing what she felt was in the best interest of her country….not ours. That aside, we need the help of Britain to stave off Guatemala. Just doing the basic math, you will see we do not have the resources to win that war alone. For all those making reference to going to war, you might want to take a minute to rethink that. Now what we need is a competent governement who cares about the country more than filling their pockets and start making alliances. If the Guatemalans are already openly infringing on our borders, that is considered and act of aggression. I do not understand why our government does not have BDF stationed along the border. The border is in dispute and the argument will be that no one knows exactly where it lies, but if you, as a country, will not make some sort of stand, then you are inviting far more trouble.

  9. Al says:

I say let us do what Puerto Rico did let us go under the US. I am not saying America is perfect, but life would be better, some order would come to the country.

  10. jay says:

Al, are you out of your mind! Are you suggesting that we return to colonial status? Are you even a Belizean?

  11. Bear says:

Jay, there is reason to Al’s suggestion, although I doubt many of us would go that far. But it wouldn’t be so bad to be protected by a benevolent big brother like the US, especially if it came with the FBI to root out corruption inour government.

I disagree with Belizean Boy that fighting for our freedom is out of the question. The day it was formed in 1948, tiny Israel was invaded by the Arab League from every side, outnumbered about the same as we are outnumbered by the Guats. ISRAEL WON.

Many of us feel it is better to spill our blood for our freedom than to live on our knees as Guat slaves. We need the WILL to be free, and we need to BEGIN TO PREPARE to defend our nation. It would also help to try to line up some backing from the Brits or maybe even Caricom. I doubt the US would take sides. STRENGTH IS THE GREATEST GUARANTEE OF PEACE.

  12. Rose says:

They only reason guatemala is now claiming the land is because belize got oil and gold and the want to make the income of those riches that the land in belize

  13. Menoh says:

Al, you are completely batsh#t crazy. The US is not the best country to EVER think about going under….with their ultra nut job conservatives and butting into everyone’s business, no way….

  14. CEO says:

Why doesn’t America give back Mexico their land that they illegally took from them in the Mexican American war. Why doesn’t the UK give some land to the NRA to quiet them down? So then why the heck are we suppose to give up land to Guatemala?

Oh yeh lets go to the ICJ for them to decide or future for us! This is so good for us! I hope all you how are preaching this gospel get some sense now.

One thing may save us now is we found oil and America needs every drop and they know our leaders would give them every drop much easier than the Guats would so they may help us until our little oil field runs dry!

Is this crap or what? Vexing just to hear and see this!

  15. CEO says:

    I meant IRA

  16. moses EX PC says:

Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country.

We should not be acting like kiato when s$#& get thrown in the water. Let’s pull back and figure this !@#$ out without acting like kiato. Our best bet is to get shelter from the UN and our alliances with our Caribbean brothers and Mexico. The British owe us. An oral commitment will suffice to scare off the Guats. Guatemala remembers what happened in the Falklands. Don’t cry for me Argentina… Guatemala. Look it, we are neighbors and we would like to continue to get along but enough is enough. The people of Guatemala really are not interested in seizing Belize it is the oligarchy in Guatemala. They killed tens of thousands of indigenous Indians from 1980 to 2000 during heir civil war to control their lands. Belizeans who have no idea what life is like in the republics should be wary. One only has to read the history of our neighbors, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, these people are crazy. God save Belize!! Poke and dough boy stick will not work this time. As for the US, they are the biggest bully of the world, they should return Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California to Mexico.
