Devon Vasquez remanded for robbery of purse

Twenty year-old Devon Vasquez is tonight on remand at the Belize Central Prison after failing to pay a fine when he was found guilty of robbing a woman of her purse.  Vasquez appeared before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith, who flatly rejected his testimony, as well as that of his alibi witness, who testified that his friend was at home sleeping on the night of the incident.  On June sixteenth, 2012, Anais Costodio, whilst in the company of her sister, was walking along Marine Parade when she was relieved of a handbag containing an Ipad, an Iphone, as well as Samsung cell phone.  In court today, Vasquez, a first-time offender, denied the allegations stating that he was at home at the time of the robbery.  Vasquez was ordered to pay the victim two thousand dollars for the stolen items.  He was also given bail of a thousand dollars of which he was only able to pay half.

The sentence was too light for my taste, first time criminal or not. The fine may not even exceed the value of the items he forcibly stole!

  2. Oscar965 says:

Set the example with this one. Fines should be even higher…cause we have too many assh… like this one. We work hard and they just want to grab and run…too many lazy youth in our country today…

  4. BmpResident says:

The alibi should have gotten locked down too for Contempt of Court.

  5. Bear says:

Good point, BmpResident. There must be a penalty for lying in court. I personally think the penalty should always be the same as the punishment for the crime they lied about.
