McDonalds & Subway now hiring Belizeans for Canada

Having an opinion about a topic is easy, but finding a job is one of the most difficult tasks a person can be presented with. According to the Statistical Institute of Belize September 2012 Labor Market Survey; sixteen point one percent of the population is unemployed. In other countries, there is a shortage of people to fill labor intensive posts. And perhaps that is why a company from Canada is back for the third time to recruit potential workers to make sandwiches for Subway or to flip burgers at McDonalds. According to Linda West, President of the Actyl Group, there are Belizeans who are working in Alberta, following their recruitment drive in December 2012, and January 2013. This morning West was processing applicants at the Labor Department and she says following the last session on Wednesday morning in Belize City, the recruitment drive will continue on to Belmopan.

Linda West, President, Actyl Group Inc.

“About eighty people have been hired so far; not all of them have made it to Canada, but they are in the process. We’re hoping to hire about a hundred and twenty-five more people this time down.”

Jose Sanchez

“What are the actual dates that you are seeing applicants?”

Linda West

Linda West

“We are seeing applicants all day today, Tuesday; and then Wednesday morning in Belize City. And then out in Belmopan, we are seeing Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday.”

Jose Sanchez

“Now the actual positions you are looking at? What are the qualifications? Are you looking for younger people? What are the demographics?”

Linda West

“Yes, this time we are mostly looking for people to work in McDonalds or Subway. Also fast-food restaurants. We are looking for people under the age of thirty-five; you must have high school (diploma). We prefer them to have some experience as a waiter or waitress or hospitality courses are very good also.”

Jose Sanchez

“In terms of the length of time once someone gets out there, they are thinking about the future of settling down; getting Canadian citizenship. How long does these other processes take once they are there?”

Linda West

“Yes it’s a great question. So you work generally for your same employer for two to three years. During that time, frequently you can emigrate to Canada and get your Canadian permanent residency and then your citizenship in five. Ah and that’s the full passport in five. You first go as a temporary foreign worker and if you are not successful then that’s all you get to do; is your two year contract. But the vast majority of people will all be given an opportunity to apply for permanent residency and then citizenship.”

Jose Sanchez

“So once you are there, essentially you are guaranteed no less than two years work?”

Linda West

“Yes, two years work and then you can do another temporary foreign workers program for another two years. But if you haven’t emigrated by the end of that, then you’re coming back home. So some people might want to come back home, but they come back with a lot of skills and having had an adventure. And many more will actually be allowed to emigrate.”

Jose Sanchez

“Speaking of skills, are there at any point where your company looks for skilled labor?”

Linda West

“We are. We frequently look for skilled labor and we are bringing a lot into the trades but not this time. This time is almost all McDonalds. We are accepting resumes for the trades, but I’m mostly taking them home and setting up the interviews later.”

Once again, the Actyl Group will continue to process applicants Wednesday morning at the Labor office on Albert Street and then it will move on to the Capital for the remainder of the week.

Where will these Belizeans live in Canada. Housing, clothes, and food. McDonalds and subways only pays minium wages? Why not hire Americans right across the border from Detroit where the unemployment is at an all time high?

  2. Whappy says:

Well Wayne, that’s because the Americans will not work for minimum wage, will complain about deplorable living conditions, do not work hard, and will probably end up finding some reason or the other to sue them. It is sad that they even bypass Mexicans to go work up there. Funny that our Government would rather lose human capital to send people to work at Mcdonald’s instead of developing our resources right home here and setting up newer industries and factories in which our people can work and develop themselves, gain some civic pride and self worth and try to get themselves out of poverty. The reason why they do not do this is because it is a lot easier to keep people poor and dependent on you, so that when election time comes around, they can buy your vote for $100 of your own money.

Here is a view from the other side. Not saying this is a bad program but it does smell like corporations using the system to get at cheap labour.

WHERE in Belmopan will they be processing applicants this week?

  6. disowmicountry says:

Whappy,I agree with you 100%. We have such potentials for development to improve Belize. We have lovely climate, fertile lands etc. We need the government to step in and train its people to develop those lands with agriculture. That means education and financial support. The return will be ten-fold.

  7. Tashybze says:

Yes but it’s way better than people just sitting on their ass or stealing people or begging for work. Get your @$$ up and work Belize and save even if it’s $5.00 a week save your money. Stop thinking about now and think about later. Its better than doing nothing.

  8. Bear says:

    VOTE FOR WHAPPY.

Sad that our most important export is our citizens, because our leaders have destroyed our nation in so few years.

  9. Canadian in Belize says:

I say to the Belizeans who get the job. RUN as fast as you can to Canada. The land of opportunity and freedom. Work for cheap wages until you have your papers and then you are home free. And be smart and never come back to this corrupt dirty little country.

The ignorance of the Belizean people is borderline comedy but for some reason I think you are serious (Whappy). Oh well, if you are given an opportunity you would be a fool to turn it down. And if you choose to turn it down, what will you do now. Continue to wait for a change or better opportunity. Yeah, that’ makes sense said no one.

Actually Coco’s response is probably better “…they will probably abuse you.” The propaganda from the IGNORANT and UNEDUCATED seems to be rampant in Belize.
