A Belizean who made his name in Guatemala as a politician and a top international lawyer has died. Teleforo Guerra Chan was born in Benque Viejo and moved to Guatemala at the age of fourteen to study. He remained there where he served as attorney general once and successfully defended high profile clients. Telesh, as he was known, was engaged by the Belize government years ago in the case of the B.D.F. soldiers captured by the Guatemalan military and managed to get them to Belize. More recently, he made the international headlines when he was retained by software pioneer John McAfee who was wanted as a person of interest in the murder of Gregory Faull in San Pedro. Telesh secured freedom for John McAfee who instead of being brought back to Belize, boarded a plane and headed to the United States. But even as he made his name in Guatemala, Telesh also maintained ties to family in Belize,

apart from the joke he did his job well as a lawyers helping our soldiers when we needed and he did what he studied for a lawyer so, R.I.P what we could have done is hire him for the problems we have wit the guats invading our jewel and cutting our forest illegally but his gone.

There wasn’t even an arrest warrant out for as a result how did Guerra secured freedom for him.This man was a double agent why are Belizeans patronizing him?

Perhaps I was already in infant one, but I vividly remember one early morning along with one of my cousins, we went to the Mopan by the Matanza to get water and there he was; standing by the bridge. He told us he was going to Guatemala to study. He gave us candy and two cheap necklace as a gift for my sister and for my female cousin. Years later, he came back to Benque. Others came back e.g. Edgar Puga. He went into politics. I can still see him giving political speeches infront of VICTORIA. It was a club that used to be on Victoria Street next to Miquel Salazar. He never made it in politics. Why Mr. Price was not able to draft him is unbeknown to me. Perhaps because he came from a NIP family. All the Guerras from Benque were hard- core NIPs at the time. Of all the speeches, he gave, a phrase still rings in the back of my mind: TENGO SENTIMIENTOS POR MI PUEBLO. Perhaps feeling rejected by his own people from Benque, was what pushed him to renouce British Honduras citizenship. I may be speculating but what is not speculation is: That Belize lost the service of a legal genius and that political victimization is very well alive today in Belize as it was fifty years ago in then British Honduras. Telesh; thanks for what you did for our BDF.
@Islander i was inclined to think the same thing, but then i read that he was 78 years old when the axe fell. Seventy-eight. that’s enough, so in the case of Karma, justice was delayed and so justice was denied. he got off scot free. Good, Telesh.
@ Lucas, I did not know Telesh but I certainly can identify with his struggles of political victimization meted out by George Price and his administration during the 60’s and 70’s. The massive brain drain that the Jewel suffered during those years may well explain the present circumstances affecting the socio-economic conditions at home.
Ask Cornelius Cacho, Dr. Lennox Pike, Dr. Kenrick Leslie, just to name a few, about the pressure they endured that eventually led to their self imposed exile, simply because they were of a different political persuasion than George Cadle.
So I fully understand why a man of Telesh’s brilliance took his talents west of the border.
By the way I personally know Edgar Puga. He was the Chief Engineer at the Min. of Works when I worked there in the 80’s.
As a Belizean student who studied in Guatemala, I owe a lot to this man. and I am sure a lot of Belize’s engineers, doctors, dentists,architects, veterinarians feel the same way , . at a time when it was risky for Belizeans to be in Guatemala, 80’s and90’s this gentleman was our “padrino” he would sign as legal guardians for our immigration documents, he facilitated our entrance to public universities, he attended our independence day parties. he was a true BELIZEAN and did far more for this country than many of these jack asses that are commenting. RIP TELESH!!
I never knew Telesh personally but he was my lawyer. When Belizeans seeking higher education crossed borders, Telesh was the one who take care of our immigration status. He never charged a cent. Thanks, Telesh, rest in peace; rise in glory.
God knows whom he was. RIP to him. We will all end up there. As for Louisville, Ky, most Belizeans who leave the Jewel are economic refugees rather than political. Many of us grew up dreaming of owning a US passport. So, congrats Louisville. Take responsibility for your actions and stop trying to lay blame at the foot of GP for those who had the American Dream.
This man was a genius lawyer with power. Everyone knows Mcafee is guilty pervert and killer drug dealer but look at Telesh! Freedom for a fee! Smart man! RIP!
