Although the trial will be run along clear-cut legal lines, this is far from a clear-cut, unemotional issue and feelings on both sides are running deep. Today, the media asked the hard questions, including a query about an existing perception that there is a foreign agenda at work, and Caleb Orozco is just a pawn of foreign gay rights activists who have a vested interest in this landmark case. Orozco took obvious offense to the question, while U-RAP Litigation Specialist Westmin James stayed the course.

“This is about Mister Orozco who is a Belizean and it is about enforcing the Belizean constitution. It is Mister Orozco who is the party in this case as well as the Attorney General. In fact, it is—and UNIBAM, which was a party originally to the action which is a local organization. It is the churches who has applied to strike out a local body from the case, from being a party to this case. It was in fact the churches who did not want this local body to be part of the case and at first they were successful to remove UNIBAM as a party, but then subsequently, the court allowed UNIBAM to become an interested party, which is the same level as the churches and some of these other organizations. So first of all, this is and it is only, Mister Orozco who is the party to this and the claimant is Belizean. It is about Belizean people and the persons that it affects and the rights of Belizeans.”

“I’m always eager to answer that question. The same person that accuses us of a foreign agenda just needs to look into a mirror and see what color he is or where he is from—I believe he is from Texas. And so let’s put it one step forward. If you look at all the evangelical groups at the University of Belize, there are a lot of Americans who lead evangelical groups. So if they want to accuse us of a foreign agenda, they just need to look at themselves. It is a pot calling the kettle black. The other thing is foreign agenda; there are thousands and thousands of households in this country that have gay Belizeans. The issue for those families with gay relatives is not a foreign one; it is a family centered one. And there is a reason why I brought this case before the court; because they themselves know and have experienced prejudice in the streets and around the neighborhoods to know how difficult it is. I know how difficult it is. And so for that criticism to hold water, for me those persons who criticize have no integrity.”

If these people are allowed to change the laws as enshrined in our constitution, then may God have mercy on Belize. Because, what next will it be? Same sex marriage and or lowering the age of consent? The right to infect you with HIV without any legal recourse? Who knows where will it end.

Century and the majority, especially the young people of this Century are embracing and accepting the fact that Lesbians and Gays are people too, and deserve the same rights as others. Unibam and Orozco are just lying when they deny being pawns in an international, foreign agenda –look at their representatives and spokespersons, only tokens come from Belize. Without the foreign intervention, this case would not be in court now.
The UN / US / EU social agenda is for using free abortion as birth control, same-sex marriage, and educating children of all ages about tolerating all kinds of sexual perversion, there’s no “right or wrong,” and all society has a right to say how you raise your children.
