If found guilty, Belizean faces 38 years in Guatemalan prison

According to a report coming from Guatemala, a Belizean may face thirty-eight years in prison if he is found guilty of kidnapping. Thirty-three year old Joseph Budna was charged along with three other individuals of kidnapping nineteen year old U.S. national, Luis Byron Reyes Onofre through which they hoped to obtain one million quetzales from Reyes’ father. Budna’s defense attorney is Jorge Valladarez and he is likely to argue that Reyes Onofre staged his own kidnapping. Budna is being held at a prison in Zacapa. If he is found innocent of kidnapping Reyes Onofre, Budna still faces two other kidnapping charges in Chiquimula, south of Zacapa, Guatemala. Budna once made headlines in Guatemala in 2012 after he was arrested because of a street shootout involving police. He was accused of being the mastermind behind a kidnapping ring that networked in Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and Mexico. Budna had also made headlines several times in Belize when his vehicle was shot on Albert Street; he claimed he was only offering a stranger a ride. He was also involved in several strange incidences claiming to be the victim of kidnapping. He has been arrested for drug trafficking and interesting these incidents took place while he passed himself off as a freelance journalist.

I always knew there was something up with this guy. He seems like a sociopath, the type of criminal who commits his crime and still wholeheartedly believes he is a good person and that he is not doing anything wrong.
