Chiac’s sudden death on roadside was actually a murder

The investigation into the death of twenty-two year old Angel Chiac has turned to one of murder. Chiac’s body was found on Tuesday night at about eight o’clock not far from a bus stop in Biscayne where he was seen alive thirty minutes  earlier. Chiac originally from Belmopan moved to Gardenia to live with his grandmother three years ago. And four months ago, he moved a little farther away to Biscayne. Since then Graciana Sho had not seen or heard from her grandson until Wednesday when she learnt that he was dead. Duane Moody has that story.

“In Biscayne to be exact, we do have an autopsy being conducted on a male person that was found on the highway and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The autopsy is yet to reveal what is the causes of death; what may have led to his demise.”

Asphyxiation by manual strangulation…that’s the cause of death in the case of twenty-year old Biscayne resident, Angel Chiac following a post mortem examination conducted on Chiac’s body by Doctor Mario Estradabran. And the investigation by the Ladyville Police has now changed to that of a murder.

“This is the area some eight feet from the pavement of the Phillip Goldson Highway between miles twenty-five and twenty-six where the lifeless body of Chiac was discovered sometime after eighton Tuesday night. Chiac’s body was lying face up and there were no visible signs to indicate that foul play was involved.”

One of the first persons to reach on the scene was Benrick Baptist. He spoke of the condition in which he found Chiac.

“We were going out to spend some time with my sister—her son had just got killed. Upon making a right on the highway, about twenty-five yards after we made the right, I saw the young man lying on the road. There was one vehicle there already, a red pickup truck. So immediately I pulled over on my side and I went over there to see what the situation was. When I got there, it was Mister Morales that was parked there and he said bwai I noh know weh happen. I ask ahn if bwai you noh sure the man get knock. Ih say well bwai ih noh look so. So I immediately start to check the man, look around, spot the flashlight on him and look to see if ih get any kind of snake bite. But the man hair was neatly combed, ih slippers never deh far from ahn like ih mi deh ina wah struggle or anything. But the way we see it we neva see no scratch on his skin. The only thing I noticed was that ih finger point mi blue and ih eyes mi half open. One of the things that I really noticed was that the man’s hair was well-combed—not rambled or anything. So immediately I said maybe this man noh dead. So I put my hand close enough to ih mouth to feel if there is breath, then nothing. And then I check ih pulse and nothing; then I realized the man really dead.”

Chiac was last seen alive under this shed approximately half a mile from where his body was found; his house was over a mile away. It wasn’t however until the following day that his grandmother, Graciana Sho, received the tragic news from neighbors.

“I mi just get to hear when I gone by the Lord’s Bank Road; right there I hear. I neva hear when dehn others gone see it in the night. Dehn tell me that dehn see ahn dead beside the road and ih got ih hand fold up like this. That is what they tell me. I noh know weh kill ahn like that.”

While the police have yet to find a motive for this homicide, Sho believes that Chiac was robbed before he was killed because he got his salary on Monday.

“Dah four months ih move from my side; ih move exactly on the fifteenth of January. But I know ih come and ih go. Ih mi gone to Belize to stay and dehn thief ahn by Glenn Street and I see somebody come crying at the gate again to see if I can take him back again. He was living with me three years.  He gone to that place and dehn others tell me that dah place noh good. One of these days ih wah get fi know; that’s what the others tell me because a lotta bad boys there; dehn could kill ahn and work with ih money.  I know he always go collect Monday in the day; every week. That is the time when he go collect and then returning back home, that’s when dehn gone mug him.”
