Solicitor General Krusen saying goodbye to Belize

Cheryl Krusen

Government is looking for a new solicitor general and that’s because Cheryl Krusen is completing her appointment with the government and is not seeking renewal of her contact which started in July 2011. The SOLGEN attracted public attention early in her term when she aggressively advanced government’s position for the Ninth Amendment Bill which would vest public utilities, B.T.L. and B.E.L., into government hands.  She also argued that constitutional amendments are not subject to judicial review. The court later ruled that the Government was wrong since, “The Founding Fathers of the Belize Constitution could not have intended by section sixty-nine to empower the government with required majorities, in the National Assembly, to make any amendment to the Constitution that would remove the fundamental pillars of democratic rule and the rule of law.” The court also found that even though provisions of the Constitution can be amended, the National Assembly is not legally authorized to make any amendment to the Constitution that would remove or destroy any of the basic structures of the Constitution of Belize.
