10 counts of incest for Isabel Mendez

The Orange Walk Town Supreme Court is also in session.  Today, Isabel Mendez was convicted by a nine member jury of ten counts of incest. Mendez was tried before Justice Herbert Lord for having sexual intercourse with the victim over a three year period which spanned from May twenty sixth 2006 to April twelfth 2009.  The Crown was represented by Crown Counsel Sabita Maharaj and sentencing has been adjourned to June twenty-seventh, 2013. Meanwhile in the Court of Appeal, on June fourteenth, the appeal of Leroy Gomez was dismissed. He had been tried and convicted before Justice Adolph Lucas for the crimes of rape and robbery in July, 2012 and he was sentenced on August eighth, 2012 to a term of imprisonment of fifteen years on each count, to run concurrently. The Director of Public Prosecutions, Cheryl Lyn Vidal appeared on behalf of the Crown and Attorney Hubert Elrington appeared on behalf of Gomez. Arguments were heard last Tuesday and the decision is reserved until June twenty first.
