Mexican vendors protest loss of business at border

For years, Mexican vendors have travelled across the border between Belize and Mexico selling just about any product to Belizeans and other Mexicans traveling to the two countries. But the days of buying sweet bread and soft drinks on the bridge are over. The new bridge that has been constructed to alleviate the commute between the two countries is not designed to accommodate the vendors, so many of them are now without a source of employment. Their sales have drastically decreased over the past two weeks. Earlier today, a group of over two hundred people: made up of adults, adolescents and children made a peaceful march in the border area. They demanding a solution to the problem caused by new bridge that plagues the commercial sector. With the new alternative and no flow of local and foreign visitors, the area has become a ghost town. Faced with the demands of the protesters, Customs Administrator, Regato Raymundo, did not appear at any time to give them a solution.

  1. only in BZE says:

I think that Belizeans should protest at the borders also. Mexicans think we stupid. The ex president Felipe Calderon gave orders to build the new bridge and road to Belize. That was not free. No^w every time you go over the bridge you have to pay 60.00 pesos with the exchange it is about $12.00. We are paying for everything and more. Chetumal is Chetumal because of Belize. We go and spend our $$$ there. Why you think they grow so fast with all the fancy malls movies, fast food because of we. And at the borders and inside Mexico they still treat us like $^it. What you think will happen if we no give them our $$$ for one day?. You already have the answer look what the bussiness people did yesturday at the new chactemal bridge. The people from subteniente Lopez need our $$$.

  2. belizean truth says:

that’s how necessary we are for chetumal. but even though they still treat us bad especially the authorities. we should stand for our country and stop going to chetumal and invest in belize. the government should better up our country and lower food price and everyday consumption. fuel is one of the factors that alot of us go to chetumal, we have petroleum in our country and the fuel price is still high.
