3 years in Belize without a proper permit

Danilo Lunes Reyes

A Guatemalan man must either pay one thousand dollars or serve a year as a guest at the Belize Central Prison. And even after doing one or the other, thirty-four year old Danilo Lunes Reyes will still be ordered out of Belize. Reyes, who has been here for three years, arrived in Belize in April 2010 and was issued a visitor’s permit which gave him permission to stay four months. He had the option to apply for an extension but never did. So it wasn’t exactly good news for the Guatemalan when immigration officials caught up with him on Monday. He was detained and taken before Magistrate Adolph Lucas on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty for failing to comply with the terms of his visitor’s permit. He was unable to pay the thousand dollar fine so was escorted to prison, where he joins twelve others awaiting expulsion, including eight Cubans who have been incarcerated for the past year.
