But denies receiving any monies from Smart
Allegations of bribery, placed squarely at Cano’s feet, are also being passionately denied. Cano says he had nothing to do with an alleged inducement of eleven thousand dollars purportedly paid to him in two installments. Despite his knowledge of the allegations against the other four men, he allowed his staff to get away with a mere slap on the wrist, contrary to the policies of the Social Investment Fund.

“He said that he gave you check stubs, which indicate that he had make and I guess that he had to make payments to officers at SIF. When you received those, what actions did you…”
Daniel Cano, Former Exec. Dir., Social Investment Fund
“I never received any check stubs. He said he gave me check stubs way back, I don’t know in 2010 or 2009; I don’t know when he said. I never received. But I can tell you that on April third of this year, he found me. I was not even home; I don’t even know how he found me. But he found me on the side of a street and attempted to give me a package which he said; here are the stubs. This is now after he has written emails; after the allegations have been made to the Contractor General and now he is trying to hand me something which he says are stubs. I did not look in the package; I did not even take the package. I don’t even know what was in that package so I have an opinion about what he might have been trying to do, but which I am not going to share because that’s speculation. But he never gave me any stubs and he attempted to give me something this year.”

“So at no time did you have any meeting with Mister Smart to discuss these allegations?”
Daniel Cano
“He had implied to me, way back in 2010 that—I think yes 2010 if I am not mistaken—that he had some officers under his payroll if you will. And he gave me specific names and it is the same four officers and he told me that he had evidence. I asked him for the evidence; I didn’t want to approach the officers without any evidence. He never produced any, but I still met with the officers and it wasn’t only me that met with the officers. There were other members of management; we met with the officers.”
Cano had been employed with the Social Investment Fund for a total of fourteen years during which he ascended to the helm of the organization. While his former employees were terminated, his resignation, with immediate effect, was requested on Monday, following an emergency meeting of the board of directors.
I believe closer scrutiny should be taken of SMART. He already had this planned from the start. He obviously played hanky panky and is so unscrupulous that he did not care to destroy other pple’s lifes! That will teach Belizeans to learn a lesson. NO ONE gives you money without any ulterior motives. Now these pple’s life’s are taken to the drain for $500, $1000, ….
I believe Mr. Cano, SMART wld not have given him that amount of money in cash. He wld have ensured there was some trail and there is NONE. SMART is a conniving, unscrupulous, $^$(&)&_*_+!
I need to say that i have work with Daniel for a number of year. I never knew him to be the type of person that the media is making him out to be. Daniel has all ways been a very hard worker, dedicated and responsible person. Being involve in the Engineering field for many years, i clearly understand the position we find ourselves when it comes to getting the job done. We all make mistakes and poor decisions at time. Its call the learning process. I truly believe the media should as part of their story investigate the character of this person before they try to throw him in the Lion’s Den.
Although the damage has been done, i do hope the best for Daniel and his family.
