Julius Espat says press conference filled with hypocrisy

The two hour and a half press conference offered on Thursday by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Immigration was informative; it brought out information long in circulation that the hanky panky at the immigration department also likely includes a hustle.  And while there are far more questions to be answered, the opposition believes that there is also a lot of hypocrisy.

Julius Espat, Deputy Leader, P.U.P.

Julius Espat

“I thought the ministers, especially the Prime Minister was disrespectful to the media; I think they displayed their arrogance. There is one thing that the Belizean people need to know and this is facts and it was brought up if I am not mistaken by Mister Mike Rudon….and admitted to that he paid for so that they can vote for him and the prime minister convinced the Belizean people that that’s not so. So that’s phase one. I am lining this out so you can see the level of hypocrisy. Phase two, the prime minister after he gets into government by what we already know as not by normal means appoints this same gentleman to be in charge of the same ministry that he publicly admitted to using for fraud. And then now he comes to us and shakes his head and says my god I don’t know what happened when he is the man ultimately responsible for putting that gentleman in the situation to commit what we consider a crime again. And the Belizean people; we are tired of hearing this rhetoric from an attorney that gets on the national level to try to defend his client instead of having our prime minister trying to defend this country. That is what I basically got off of the whole scenario yesterday.  It is happening to us because the blatant violation of our constitution is in front of us; it is happening to us because the blatant nepotism in front of us is glaring. It is happening to us because we accept it as a people and that is where the problem lies. Where in Belize would a normal Belizean commit anything close to that and he will not be investigated; even remotely close to it and you would see that they would put shackles on his hands and he would be dragged to the police station and then dragged to the magistrate’s court and he would be in jail.”

Espat says that even if a criminal investigation is sanctioned, he does not believe that it would be free of interference.
