American Fugitive caught in San Ignacio

An American fugitive has been caught in Belize.  Forty-seven year old Kenneth Hibbs is wanted by U.S. Marshalls in his home country for violation of his parole and for the theft of a motor vehicle. Hibbs was apprehended by San Ignacio Police on Thursday following reports that he was causing disturbance on Burns Avenue in downtown San Ignacio. Police responded to find a suspicious Hibbs who had no identification on him and refused to say who he was. So he was detained and following a check with U.S. authorities, it was verified that Hibbs is a wanted man. News Five spoke with deputy Officer in Charge of the San Ignacio Police Formation, Inspector Reymundo Reyes.

“Yesterday sometime around eleven o’clock in the morning, information we received of a Caucasian male persons causing disturbance or annoyance in the Burns Avenue Area. As a result, police visited Burns Avenue; they came in contact with the same male person. Upon being asked for documents and his identity, he refused to cooperate with the police. No sort of particulars or any identification was in his possession at the time. So he was brought into the station, he was processed where finger prints were obtained as well as a photograph of him. It was forwarded to Head Special Branch for verification purpose. Sometime around the evening, it was established through communication that the person is a wanted person in the U.S. for his violation of parole and theft of a motor vehicle.”

“Is there any indication as to what he was on parole for?”

“At this present moment, we do not have an idea as for what charge he was on bail and he violated his parole.”

“Do you know by any chance how long he was here in the country absconding from the authorities in the U.S.?”

“Not at this moment. We attempted to do an interview with the person, but he is not cooperating.”

“So what is the next step for Mister Hibbs?”

Insp. Reymundo Reyes

“At this moment, through Belmopan, we are getting the necessary arrangements with the embassy where he will be deported back to the U.S. sometime early next week.”

Hibbs is the second American national on the run to be caught in Belize. Earlier this week San Ignacio Police say that another fugitive turned himself in to the U.S. Embassy in Belmopan.
