Park in Buttonwood Bay getting a face-lift by residents
A park in the Buttonwood Bay area of Belize City is getting some much needed renovations courtesy of the community. Rotary Sunrise along with the Belize High School Interact Club and now the Belize City Council have partnered to beautify and upgrade the park that has for years been a hang out spot for residents in the area as well as students from the University of Belize. The vision is to transform the stretch of open space and gazebo into a playground for children, a recreational spot for teenagers and a family friendly environment for the community. But there is an initial setback with a resident who is claiming a part of the land. Today, however, work was ongoing at the venue. News Five spoke with President of the Interact Club, Vivek Budwani, who along with several members was out doing some painting to the gazebo, while loads of sand and clay were being deposited at the site.

“What Rotary Sunrise along with the Government and the community in Buttonwood Bay is that we are renovating the park here by the gazebo. We are stating off today by painting the gazebo. But what they want to do is build a playground over here and a nice environment for everyone here in Buttonwood Bay to come and hang out. And they want to do a chest area and like a playground for kids and make it really interactive and nice because they want to develop the community and make it more presentable.”

“Why was it important for you guys to jump on board and be a part of this?”
Vivek Budwani
“Because we think that the youths should be involved in today’s progress in the community because in the future, the country is for us to take. We are actually really active with a lot of community fundraisers and projects especially with our Rotary Sunrise since they are our head division. So whenever they would have projects or fundraisers, they would call us and whatever we would have, they would call us. We always help out each other like that.”

“When is it expected that this will come through to fruition and the neighborhood will be able to enjoy this development that you guys are participating in?”
Vivek Budwani
“Hopefully soon because today they are already starting to drop loads; the government has contributed a lot of loads, the community has contributed to some loads and we have already started painting the gazebo so I think pretty soon this project will be finished.”
Anyone who would like to assist the club with touches to the park is asked to contact Rotary Sunrise or the Interact Club at the Belize High School.
