Former mayor says she hopes bills are settled soon with BWC and BML

Via Phone: Zenaida Moya

While garbage woes continue to clutter City Hall and sanitation workers contemplate a very dismal Christmas, as we told you City Hall has made a payment of one hundred thousand dollars – which brings arrears down to around six hundred and seventy six thousand, or three and a half months. Now that’s a hefty debt in anybody’s book, and Mayor Darrell Bradley has come under fire from sanitation companies, because the arrears to both Belize Waste Control and Belize Maintenance Limited have been allowed to accumulate for an unprecedented period of time. One former Mayor who has taken her share of licks from sanitation companies today claimed that under her watch the arrears never exceeded seven or at most eight weeks. Zenaida Moya says that she’s heard that this Council pulls in an additional million dollars annually in subvention from central government, but even so she knows these are difficult times. Still, she says she hopes that sanitation workers get a gift this Christmas.

“I just hope I mean the people from BWC are suffering and with fairness to BML and both companies I know they employ hundreds of workers and I hope that the situation gets resolved quickly. There would be some funds allocated to these individual I mean even hey we are in December and I wouldn’t want the Belize City residence to experience any inconvenience. And the workers I will always be concerned about the workers at these two companies. And you know it will be a problem and I am hoping that the matter will be resolved and I wouldn’t want any to be laid off on account of this. I understand we are very appreciative of all of the streets are concreted and even those that the people would want to be concreted and wouldn’t be able to due to the limited funds. I am hoping that some allocation somewhere would go to paying BWC and I would also have to say with fairness to the BML for their hundreds of workers as well.”
