Sixty-eight year old retired Canadian national Keith Haslam was murdered sometime on Saturday morning, as he socialized with his wife, Ruth Jones, and George Hyde—the person with whom Jones was having an affair. The deceased had just relocated from Belmopan to the residence in Buena Vista Village, in Cayo, five days before he was brutally killed. Haslam was initially reported missing by Hyde’s brother, thirty-two year old Nelson on Saturday morning when the trio was nowhere to be found.
Nelson Hyde, Brother of Accused
“Ina di morning when I wake up, I know dehn neva had nowhere to go and I see dehn missing and I mi figure that something wrong because I mi see some hair from the man ina mi yard and that’s the reason why I figure that something happen because of the hair I find ina my yard and I end up the make a report for that because the incident happened dah my house and I neva involve ina that no kinda way.”
Inspector Reymundo Reyes, Deputy O.C., San Ignacio Police
“On the morning when he get up, he made checks for the old man in his room and found that the person was nowhere to be found. He called his cell number to find out where he is, but it was a different person who answered the phone. The phone was retrieved; we found out that the phone was damaged and immediately the brother suspected that something had happened to the old man. As a result we made up a team of officers who visited the establishment. Hair of the gentleman could have been found on top of the table in the village. In the farm, they have a plywood building which when we searched his socks was found on top of the chair; his belt was seen but outside of the building. And George Hyde, Ruth Jones and the gentleman; all of them still missing.”
According to Deputy O.C. of the San Ignacio Police Formation, Inspector Reymundo Reyes, Hyde confessed to the crime and said that the brutal killing was a case of jealousy.
Insp. Reymundo Reyes
“It was Saturday sometime around seven that George Hyde contacted his brother and said that he wanted to meet with him. And as a result, police get involved and he was captured shortly after seven p.m. in Buena Vista Village in the farm along with Ruth Jones. Upon being questioned, he admitted that he had already killed Mister Keith and as a result he volunteered and gave a statement to the police. After one in the morning, he took police about six miles east of Buena Vista Village where he pointed out the area inside a creek where police saw the lifeless body of the Canadian retiree in a face up position with what appears to be a cut wound on the back of his head.”
While San Ignacio Police awaits a directive from the D.P.P. to levy charges on the couple, it appears that Jones and Hyde are also the main suspects in another homicide, this one in Belmopan. The duo was arrested in connection with the murder of Roaring Creek taxi man, forty-seven year old Orlando Smith, whose throat was slit and his lifeless body strewn in the middle of Costa Rica Street Extension in a remote area in the Salvapan Area.
ASP Sinquest Martinez, O.C., Belmopan Police Formation
“We haven’t shifted our focus…those same two persons are our main suspect. We are completing the file and we are sending the case file to the officer of the Director of Public Prosecution for her advice and for us to proceed whatsoever advice she gave us.”
Reporter
“Can you tell us…has there been any new development that your investigators feel that these two main suspects can now be charged with murder?”
ASP Sinquest Martinez
“There were new developments, we have that in the file and like I said, it will be sent to the office of the D.P.P.”
Duane Moody for News Five.
So, Nelson Hyde, you betray your brother and you’re proud of it, so much so that you want everyone to know.
And the carnage continues under this useless and corrupt pm and gov.
He did not betray his brothe!. Wrong is wrong, and I do not blame him for doing the right thing. I wish we had more honest family members like him, then the criminals would think twice about commuting crimes.
Nelson Hyde has everything to be proud of, it takes a real man to take a stand for what is right and proper. Be sure the truth shall make you free. We need more Belizeans like him to stand up and face the challenge of being true to oneself and others even if it hurts.
