S.S.B. investigating identity theft cases

There are two reported incidences by the Social Security Board of identity theft under the names Carmen Cantun and David Cruz.  The S.S.B. said today that the cases remain under investigation. In respect of another purported case, in which it was stated that a US fugitive had been given a social security card; that has been vehemently denied by S.S.B.  as for Cantun and Cruz, preliminarily the results indicate that Birth Certificates presented to the S.S.B. for registration purposes were gotten through misrepresentation and the photographs presented were certified by a Justice of the Peace.  The S.S.B. says it will take necessary action on the findings as warranted at the end of the investigation.  The existing registration procedure for Belizeans to obtain a social security card includes the presentation of original documents show legal status in Belize, work permit, nationality certificate, as well as a CSME certificate.  S.S.B. says it continues to be watchful and is exercising due diligence in the registration process.
