Under 21 footballers compete against Panama
Football, most commonly referred to as the World’s Sport is now Belize’s sport, with all eyes set on our Under 21 National Football Team ready to take on Panama this Sunday in the last match of the Central American Games. This tournament serves as prequalification for the Central American and Caribbean Football Championship to be held in Colombia.
While the team was only assembled in January, and two players are unable to compete because they were red carded for fouls off the ball in Wednesday’s game, Coach Ian Mork feels that it will not affect Belize’s performance or its chances of winning the tournament. In a telephone interview this evening, Mork also admits that while Sunday’s game will be an uphill battle, playing the home field is definitely to our advantage and encourages all Belizeans to go out on Sunday to cheer on the U-21 team.
The game against Panama starts at four at the M.C.C. Grounds in Belize City. The winner of that game will join Barbados, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Venezuela, and the host, Colombia, in the C.A.C. Football Championship in July.
