A huge scoop of ice cream from The Ice Cream Shoppe

Scoops ice cream was once an all time favorite where family and friends went for a special treat. Well that simply delicious and decadent ice cream is back at its original location on Eve Street but it is under the label of the Ice Cream Shoppe. Aside from the name, everything is much the same in good family tradition as it relates to the original ice creams…Oreo cookie and mint chip. But if you are the adventurous type, try the new spirited flavors as Duane Moody did.

There is a buzz on Facebook about a new spot in Belize City for the entire family. The Ice Cream Shoppe opened its doors this past Friday and since then, business has been brisk. It’s located on Eve Street, where the first Scoops once stood. And so we got a taste of the ice cream they have to offer.

Molly Doley, Proprietor, The Ice Cream Shoppe

Molly Doley

“I moved back to Belize in January this year and everybody knows me as the ice cream girl so I said let me just open an ice cream shop and bring back what people have been asking for, for so long.  I opened on last week Friday; it’s been overwhelming. People are so happy to have their ice cream back. A lot of people say that it takes them back to their childhood. Customers that were loyal before coming in with their kids now saying that you know this is where I used to sit and have my ice cream. So it has been extremely fulfilling and I am really excited about what is about to happen.”

The opening of The Ice Cream Shoppe is nostalgic as, Scoops, was once owned by Doley’s father but closed back in 2005. But now, under her management and within the dip-case, is an assortment of traditional flavors as well as some flavors of her own.

Molly Doley

“I have all the original flavors that my dad started: the Oreo cookie, the butter pecan, the mint chip and then I am adding my spirited line. I’ve done one with craboo cream which is using the Travelers Liqueur and I do Guinness and peanuts. So I just add different local beverages to the ice cream to make them more adult flavors, I call them. They are adult only. I’m working on bringing in new flavors, making the ice cream parlor exciting, having people create their own flavors, different specials…I currently have like a maple bacon flavored ice cream. So I am just experimenting with ice creams that I have seen throughout my travels and things that maybe people here haven’t tried before.”

Doley says that she is using all natural products and taking the recipe she learnt from her father to provide delicious ice cream for customers.

“I stand strong behind my product. I know that it is a quality ice cream that I’ve brought. The recipe has been in my family for years and I just want to make sure that I keep the quality as high as I can. I will do gelatos eventually and sorbets so that I can bring in different things and experimenting. I won’t introduce them until I know that they meet the standards that I want to have within the store.”

…And have you heard about ice cream for diabetics? Well, the Ice Cream Shoppe has a low fat reduced chocolate treat for you. The ice cream parlor opens daily at eleven a.m. Duane Moody for News Five.

There is a kiosk in the Battlefield Park that also sells The Ice Cream Shoppe’s products, but Doley says that she intends to expand to the other districts.
