Corruption; teachers say they want real reform…
This morning teachers marched in Dangriga, and they say the march is also against corruption in government. That particular topic has grown wings lately with the revelations coming out of the Belize Airports Authority, where monies were handed out for and on behalf of Minister of State Edmond Castro. The Prime Minister and his Cabinet have maintained that it was distasteful, but not illegal. Despite that, and in response to a massive outcry and scathing public opinion, Cabinet took action. Those actions included removing Civil Aviation from Castro’s portfolio, asking directors of the BAA to resign and naming a Chair of the long defunct Integrity Commission. So are those things real reform or just for show? That’s a matter of opinion…but for B.N.T.U. President Luke Palacio – what it is…is not enough.
Luke Palacio, B.N.T.U. National President
“I have said we don’t believe it is enough, we don’t believe it is fair. And if it going to be just because they are being reactionary, then we don’t think that that is solving the problem. Again, we do say thought that yes they are starting to address some of the very same issues that we were speaking about. For example one of our issues have to do with the integrity commission, if you are going to have an integrity commission and you don’t have a body in place. If it is only going to be one person, we know that the cabinet release has indicated that Ms. Marilyn Williams have been named as the person in charge. If it is only a one person integrity commission, then it is not a commission. So those are the type of things that we need to get clarified as well.”

“Besides that do you have a concern with the fact that she is known as a U.D.P.? In fact even ran on a U.D.P. ticket?”
Luke Palacio
“Yeah we are aware of that, we are aware that she is a U.D.P.; she had contested in Albert some years ago. The bottom line is again, certain things….when we look at politics in our country; these are some of the things we are trying to change. If you are going to have a committee in place that should be representing the government and not the party in government, we are going to continue to have these types of things. But basically they have made that selection, according to that report, after consultation with the leader of the opposition. And if indeed that consultation took place and if he agreed to that then we will have to look at it at another time.”
No one anywhere can escape the the scourge of corruption. Stop fooling yourselves. Red, Blue, it does not matter. Corruption will never ever be eliminated. History has taught us that those bawling for the end of corruption will themselves be corrupt when they take over. Unu undastand.
Democracy is a virus for corruption. An autocratic benevolent government works best for Belizeans; the screwing is done by one party and we get used to it; as opposed to fake governments waiting for their turn to eff us. Don’t piss on me and tell me its raining.
