Merida harpist solo debut at the Mexican Institute

Just at about this time at the Mexican Institute in Belize City, Harpist Ada Tzab from Merida is presenting a solo recital. The twenty-three year old musician has been studying at the Advance School of Arts in the Yucatan Peninsula where some Belizean students are currently enrolled. Tzab has been invited to Belize by the Mexican Embassy as a part of its cultural exchange program. It is Tzab’s first performance beyond the Mexican borders. She says she cherishes the moment and even as she has been playing the harp for four years, it is a process of learning and perfecting the intricacy of the instrument.

“I am very excited to be here. I haven’t thought about doing this. But I am happy to share with the people from this City and this country about the art that I am learning to do and I am really excited to be here. I have been playing for almost four years and I started with the piano when I was a child. I played the piano some years and afterwards I got interested in the harp.  I want to share the possibilities of the sound of the harp. Sometimes we hear it in movies that it sounds heavenly, but the harp has more sounds, characteristics and I want you to have a whole idea of what the harp can do. It is not everything, but I want to share.”

“It’s remarkable this presentation because it is part of the Mexican Embassy’s cultural event for this year. The Mexican Institute from its inception twenty-one years ago, the purpose was to encourage the cultural exchange between Mexico and Belize and to also encourage young Belizeans to get into music and especially to nurture their interest in music.”

For the past twenty-one years, the Mexican Institute has been fostering the talent of both Belizean and Mexican artist in the various forms of the creative arts including painting, music and dance and tonight’s performance is the first for the series of events slated for 2014.
