Opposition says appointment of Anwar Barrow as Chairman of Executive Committee at B.T.L is nepotism

On Tuesday, we reported on a series of major management changes at the top of the government controlled Belize Telemedia Limited on the heels of the departure of Karen Bevans as Chief Operations Officer. While it had been rumored for some time, it was officially confirmed that Anwar Barrow has been named Chair of the Executive Committee of Telemedia replacing Nestor Vasquez, who remains Chairman of the Board of Directors. It means that the Prime Ministerial son is now officially overseeing the daily operations of the government-controlled telephone company. We say officially because Barrow as member of the executive committee already had an office at the telephone company. Along with Vasquez, the other two committee members are Ambrose Tillett and C.E.O. Colin Young. Barrow also sits and is listed as the number two man in the Board of Directors of B.T.L. His appointment came into effect on April first and today, it prompted a reaction from the People’s United Party. The opposition is seeking the immediate overturn of Barrow’s appointment as Chair of the Executive Committee of Management of B.T.L. The P.U.P. charges that as son of Prime Minister Dean Barrow, Anwar’s appointment is a blatant act of nepotism and the opposition says it does not believe it is in the best interest of B.T.L. or the people of Belize.

Additionally, there are allegations that Barrow is a non-executive provider of business funds to other companies which either have contracts or are indirectly involved in business with B.T.L. According to the release, if the Board of Directors fails to act on the request to have him removed forthwith, the party will call on P.M. Barrow to do the right thing and have his son resign. In responding to the release, Barrow issued a statement late this evening saying that the People’s United Party has been attempting to attack his credibility with unfounded allegations since 1997, futile efforts which have resulted in legal action and financial compensation. Barrow says he continues to remain focused while working with B.T.L.’s Board of Directors and its committee members to move the company forward under the guidance of Board Chairman Nestor Vasquez.
This is blatant corruption on the part of the BARROW ADMIN…….IF THE GOOD PEOPLE OF BZE DOES NOT DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS, THEY WILL CONTINUE TO LIVE IN POVERTY. MY QUESTION IS HOW DID HE GET THIS JOB; WHAT ARE HIS QUALIFICATIONS. THE MEDIA NEEDED TO QUESTION THIS APPOINTMENT FROM THE OUTSET, BUT AGAIN I AM NOT SURPRISE BECAUSE THE MEDIAIN BZE IS MEDIOCRE AT BEST.
Nepotism, seriously? This should be a criminal offence. Only in a banana republic like ours. So much for Marcus Garvey. This looks more like Robert Mugabe! We need constitutional reform!!! It is the lawyers, the very ones charged with the oath of protecting our legal system, who are destroying our system so that they can hustle ad nauseum. We need a robust watch dog like the U.S. Justice Department, case in point: once upon a time Belize USAID representative Neboysha Brashich was indicted and sent to prison for giving his wife a job with USAID Belize. Imagine what they would do to the King In Waiting?

The rise and rise of Karen Bevans at BTL is the best example of what has pushed this Land by the Carib Sea into the abyss of corruption from which we cannot return. Fit a Square Peg into a Round Hole and manipulate it for personal benefits. This happened at BTL. This is happening at BTB. Those who pay this pied piper sing “to hell with the Belizean people and everything else”………..And the beat goes on!

He is the key master that closes the door to the public eyes so ministers like john saldivar can operate their business like Mytheon in anonymity. After all they spend millions to get their public service job so they have to make it back somehow. As for the question posed by Mike Rudon “So how much does government pay to Mytheon Solutions every month?”in the other segment entitled “Mytheon – big business and big money – is it owned by Minister John Saldivar”, not sure about how much he makes per month now Mike but you can do the math for the year 2012 when he made 1.5 million.

Anwar is the black sheep-no law degree or anything worth noting. I’ve done business with him. In essence-he’s like a used car salesman. Nothing wrong with that-but that’s what he is. Like a good father, (and probably enforced by constant annoying requests by an ex-wife), Father Dean does everything he can from a position of power to secure as many board seats or businesses as possible for the kid. The PM’s rein is over shortly and the kid can’t practice law, so Father Dean is collecting board seats for Anwar like a squirrel gathers nuts. Dad pushes all the buttons. Anwar’s Quick Stop is nothing more than a loan shark operation. Look at the interest rates and collateral required. Pawn shops in Las Vegas don’t charge his rates. I can’t believe he’s a Board Member of anything, let alone BTL.
Conflict of interest , Anwar will buy phones from his business on freetown and resale them to BTL. This is unbelievable that no media house has pointed this out .
