Council of Churches meet with Prime Minister

The leadership of the Belize Association of Evangelical Churches met today with Prime Minister Dean Barrow at his Belize City office. It came on the heels of a report that Director of Women’s Commission had said in an interview in New York that the government would proceed with the revised national gender policy. Ann-Marie Williams has denied that report, but still the burning issue was the gender policy and reports that government intends to move on it without including input from the churches.  The meeting lasted more than two hours, and in a release issued this evening by the Evangelical Churches states that, “The Prime Minister made clear that remarks reportedly made suggesting the Government proposing to move ahead on the National Gender Policy without the Church are not factual.  The remarks, if made, do not reflect the position of the Govt., and Govt. will not move to implement the National Gender Policy without seeking agreement with the Churches.” The Association ends by stating that Government has gotten professional advice on the submission by the churches and will soon be in a position to convene a meeting to reach consensus.

SMH! This seems to be all they care about. Rampant crime, rampant corruption, rampant victimization, shameless nepotism, a horrible murder rate and shameless disregard for the Belize Constitution, The Church is certainly “important” in Belize. If they want to convince people like me that they are still relevant, frankly, this won’t do!
