Internet rates in Belize are the highest, but the speed is the lowest
The latest stats on regional internet speeds versus cost are in, and Belize is coming in almost dead last, comparatively speaking. The report was submitted by the ICT Pulse, which has been tracking internet speeds and prices across the Caribbean since 2011. This year, they analyzed nineteen countries from the region. Of note is that of the nineteen, Belize is the only country which still offers a speed of one hundred and twenty-eight megs. Currently, there are six countries offering a maximum of eight megs. Five of them – Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, St. Kitts, the Turks and Caicos – do so for less than one hundred and fifty U.S. dollars. Belize does so for three hundred and fifty-three dollars and fifty-seven cents, U.S. The study also looked at the best two-meg plan available. Again, Belize is dead last with the highest prices for a two-meg connection….one hundred and twenty-one dollars and twenty-two cents. The study then finally looked at what it calls ‘bang for your buck’ – the fastest internet speed that could be purchased for no more than sixty U.S. dollars per month. Once again, Belize is last. In the Bahamas, you would be able to access speeds of thirty megs for less than sixty dollars. According to the study, in Belize, the most you’d be able to get for that price is a five twelve kilobit connection.
The world know BTL ripping people off.
Well i sure dr miranda from btl will have another stupid answer for the high rates and #%%* service. How long poor people have to suffer not getting proper service. Even rich people should complain cuase they wasting money on shitty service.
Wow! How upsetting….. The internet is really what advances a country behind the scenes. It gives individuals a tool to use to discover innovations around the world and possibly bring those into Belize. This sparks interest in the young individuals eventually making the country better. Limiting this resource to the upper class by way of extremely high prices only limits the progress of Belize as a whole. I hope these prices come down with some competition to get more people onto the internet. Belize has so much potential!
While prices are high, the main difference is that Belize has slower speeds. Only two other countries offer a connection for $12 a month. So it would appear that Belize offers internet to the poor. a 128kb connection and a 100mb connection will both allow a student to do his homework. This study only shows that Belize is a poor Latin American country, not a wealthy Caribbean country.
THE BIG QUESTION IS, WHAT IS THE GOV. PLANNING TO DO AFTER THIS RESULTS?
This is the time the gov/ PM should make a public press release as to how he plans to alleviate this poor service and high rates. but bait they ain’t gonna waste time with this. I rather feel they’re more interested in how they would try squeeze the Belizeans for more money for next election campaigns coming soon.
One of the first things any corrupt government does is own the telecommunications industry.
They set the rates, cook the books, and steal at will.
They also intercept emails and tap phones without court orders, like UDP did to the PUP a few years back.
The slow speeds just makes it easier for GOB to control the people in the police state they are building.
People talk about how corrupt PUP was, but they were babies compared to the UDP pros.
The problem with PUP is that it has no spine, no leadership to stop this corruption,
Considering 90% of Belizeans think the UDP is making the country corrupt, for some reason PUP can’t pull it together.
Ultimately it is Belizeans who must staunch this poison or live in a failed country.
I am an expat from north america who lived in Belize for many years.
I paid a fortune for internet while I was there. Finally got sick and tired of the high prices, high crime and 3rd World lifestyle and moved 7 miles north to Mexico. I now have 10 Mbps Internet for only USD$41.50 per month. I could get faster but 10 does the trick for me.
Plus 6 pak beer for USD$5. and tons of beer choices, good roads, shopping malls filled to the rim with products, and everything your heart could desire is available here in Mexico.
I would advise any tourist or expat to bypass Belize 100% and live or vacation in Mexico instead.
