FIFA Under Fire, Top Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges in Zurich

F.F.B. President Ruperto Vicente is in Zurich, Switzerland ahead of a congress later this week which will see FIFA President Sepp Blatter facing re-election.  The news tonight however, is that international football’s governing body is the subject of two unrelated investigations into alleged corruption.  In an early morning raid today, fourteen FIFA officials were arrested on corruption charges, including racketeering, wire fraud and money-laundering conspiracies.  Following their detention, the US Department of Justice issued a lengthy statement accusing FIFA executives of a twenty-four year scheme to enrich themselves through the corruption of international soccer.  News Five sought a comment from Vicente earlier today but he respectfully declined on the basis that he did not know much about what was taking place with the arrests.  The following news clip is taken from CNN and details the nature of the probes launched into FIFA’s operations.

The Football Federation of Belize, which falls under FIFA’s statutes, has been busy preparing the Jaguars for the second round of World Cup qualifiers where Belize will face the Dominican Republic in June.
