Guatemala in Chaos as Vice-President is Arrested

Over in Guatemala, there is huge political crisis which could lead to the collapse of the government of President Otto Perez Molina. On Friday, the former vice president, Roxana Baldetti who resigned back in May, was arrested at a hospital for customs fraud in which three point seven million dollars in bribes were accepted as part of a customs corruption scandal. This afternoon, she was formally charged with fraud. Guatemala’s attorney general and a UN-backed anti-corruption body, known as the CICIG, sought to impeach Pérez on Friday after a phone hotline used in the scandal linked the president to the scheme. Despite calls for his resignation, on Sunday night, Molina said he is not stepping down and he rejected the allegations made against him. Earlier, two ministers resigned saying they could no longer work with the administration. So where does this leave the hot-button issue of the Sarstoon? Our understanding is that it has now been pushed to the backburner since there are far more pressing issues that Guatemala is experiencing at this moment, just before the September sixth elections.

Ali and his 40 would never let this happen in Belize, any cabinet member or close friend would never be indicted.

Just look at the good job Hulse did in cleaning up the Penner mess. Secret passports poof. UDP thieves may get back benched and sit on ice, but never indicted. It is a blood oath.

That is why Belizean corruption is better than the Guats. They may have a bigger military that would roll Belize in 30 minutes.

Disgusting! Clean up your dirty mess instead of bullying little Belize. Belize for the Belizeans!

  3. Al says:

As usual, every time Guatemala starts threatening us, some upheaval always happen to them. If its not earthquake or volcano, its rifts in their government. Whenever you hear news like this within our own government, where politicians are actually being charged and locked up, it will be historic.
