Guatemalan Presidential Frontrunner Has Eyes on Belize
The Guatemalan claim to fifty percent of Belizean territory has surfaced as an issue in the Guatemalan elections. On Thursday, an interview with Guatemalan presidential candidate, Jimmy Morales, spread like wildfire on social media drawing comments from many Belizeans. Now, Morales is the winner of the first round of elections held just this past Sunday in that neighboring country. In a special sit-down with Guatemala’s Telediario’s Elsie Sierra, he spoke about his campaign strategy going into the run-off elections in October and about his platform, if elected. While Morales says he will focus on areas such as poverty, healthcare and education, he also has his eyes set on Belize. For him, a priority is the “recovery of Belizean territory for Guatemala.”
Jimmy Morales, Presidential Candidate, Guatemala (Translated)
“The territorial differendum with Belize. We have a territorial differendum that we, as Guatemalans, can and should be fighting for. But it doesn’t interest us. We don’t even consider what’s happening in the Sarstoon. It is like we are not even interested in all the cayes and the islands and the access to the Atlantic. And that is a national subject. It is a major topic that should be a priority issue for us. It’s should be a main subject for the Guatemalan Ministry of Education to educate the students. Why are we drawing the map of Guatemala without Belize when the position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is that the map of Guatemala should be drawn with Belize included and with broken lines because we have a territorial differendum and that we should go to the International Court of Justice? It is a national issue that while it does not interest everybody, it should be a national issue.”
In the run-off elections, Morales will be going up against Sandra Torres, the former wife of President Alvaro Colom.
That whole country can go to hell.
I don’t know why Guatemala has the idea they should take over a large piece of Belize. They can’t even manage their own country, let alone another one too!
TO ANY WINNER , ANY GUATEMALAN PRESIDENT, TELL THEM TO PLAY IT COOL, TELL YOUR VOTERTS ANY LIE TO GET THEIR VOTES, BUT EASY, ALTO, STOP, NO BELIZE FOR GUATEMALA, PETEN IS FOR BELIZE !!! “CALMANTE” . BELIZE ES DE LOS BELIZENOS, CALMENSE!!!
A MENOS QUE DESEAN OTRO TERREMOTO !!!
What’s telling here is not Morales own stance but his frustration that other Guatemalans don’t care and have no interest in asserting the claim. This should prove to Belizeans that the Guatemalan claim is dead in the water, a mere vestige of outdated political rhetoric and will NOT get support from the Guatemalan people. Morales just told us why they keep putting off referendum. He knows the issue will not pass. His statement shouldn’t cause Belize and concern. On the contrary it is very reassuring.
kmh, go down south and please present your message to Wily.
Deja de payasadas, Jimmy!!
