Guatemalan Diplomatic Note: Kindly Leave Illegal Fishermen Alone

John Saldivar

While the Guatemalans seem to have had a change of heart in respect of the erection of an F.O.B. on the Belizean side of the Sarstoon River, its government, via a recent diplomatic note, has made a rather absurd request.  It is essentially asking that Guatemalan fishermen who continually exploit marine resources in the area illegally, be left alone.  As it stands, residents of the nearby Guatemalan coastal community make their livelihoods from the unimpeded harvesting of fisheries in the estuary.  With a permanent military and coast guard presence in the area, law enforcement activities will be ramped up to mitigate further exploitation.  During his presentation earlier today, Minister of National Security John Saldivar touched on the issue but stopped short of stating government’s position on the request.

John Saldivar, Minister of National Security

“From that, in this translated version of that diplomatic note says and I quote, “On this particular and specifically concerning the forward operating base, this ministry would like to remind what was stated by the Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred P. Elrington, in respect to that same that will be operating a base for the Coastguard of Belize; that is to say of a policing character. In that same order of ideas, this ministry expects that the operations that will take place on that base will not interfere with the artisanal fishing activities of the inhabitants of the area.” Close quotes.”

How stupid can you be? Lol. If Guatemala and its nationals don’t even abide by policy set to them, why should we even listen to what they say. Belize has its law and if you can’t abide, then you will have to reap the punishment.

  2. Marie says:

We need the educated men and women of belize to be incharge of running the country, not this ministry that can’t if write, make decisions in negotiating and speaking at meeting with other countries. Wake up Belizean! !

  3. Sherlette Gentle says:

What the hell are you talking about. If it’s illegal, why do you want them to be left alone.? How much are they paying you? You put Guatemalans ahead of the safety of our Belizean. Stevie Wonder can see this bs. Keep giving them an inch and see what will become of Belize.

  4. Al says:
