SP Police Say Crime Down in that Municipality

The murder in San Pedro last week, followed so shortly after by another Tuesday night – both violent – may give the impression that La Isla Bonita is becoming a dangerous place. After all, this is Mother Nature’s best kept secret, where hundreds of thousands of tourists flock annually to experience a bit of paradise. But is that paradise becoming tainted by crime? Deputy Coastal Executive Officer Henry Jemott says that’s not so, and the statistics don’t lie.

Insp. Henry Jemott

“We closed last year with a 29% decrease in crime overall so I differ with that. Everybody knows and you can go on the street and ask San Pedro people. They feel much safer. Even the tourists feel much safer because they have seen a large decrease which is a 29% decrease. My thing is that San Pedro, just like anywhere else in the world, will have crime. But what you need to know is that the crime is not against the tourists. Some of it is the natives causing problems among themselves and we have seen that for a while. It’s different families on the island who are causing problems.”

Not only is La Isla Bonita becoming a dangerous place, ALL OF BELIZE is dangerous as well. And, no, statistics don’t lie. People lie. If you don’t want to admit that Belize is pretty deadly these days, I’m sure there are numbers you can use to justify your position. Meanwhile, however, the number of accused shooters on remand continues to grow and the number of homicides continue to grow. If you’re a tourist, you might want to reconsider visiting the jewel anytime soon!

Belize is a absolutely beautiful country with beautiful and friendly people. I will continue to visit Belize. Always use common sense. Example. Do not go walking around in the dark areas at night alone. Duh. Come on people. The USA is not any safer.
