Guatemala Lashes Out at Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington
As we reported on Monday, Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington spoke at the United Nations lashing out at the incredulous statements made last week by the Guatemalan President, Jimmy Morales. Soon after Elrington spoke, the UN Permanent Representative of Guatemala, Jorge Skinner Klee upped the ante when he exercised the right to reply to respond to Elrington. Klee, a former Ambassador to Belize chastised Elrington saying he listened in disbelief to the statement. But Klee made further assertions. He told the UN that the minor, Julio Rene Alvarado Ruano was shot by an armed militia describing the incident as irrational conduct on Belize’s part. He said, “Today, we are seeing another kind of violence due to the conduct that contravenes the friendly links between nations, as prescribed by the first article of United Nations Convention. In the last decade defenceless Guatemalan farmers have lost their lives. Their only mistake is that they find themselves in areas under Belizean administration but they do not threaten peace and security.” According to Klee, violent deaths have always gone unpunished. And in reference to the expert report for the O.A.S., he said that Guatemala did not reject the credentials of the experts but there are inconsistencies in the report. Facts were not included and some have been deleted, he claims. He further asserted that to say that Guatemala forces accompanied citizens to illegally enter Belize is irresponsible. This shows that Belize did not guard the crime scene and therefore compromised the investigation and results. The fact that the minor was previously detained does not justify the use of force by the joint patrol of Belize. He also stated that “Guatemala has been patient and conciliatory for more than one hundred and fifty years and had to put up with the delaying tactics and treachery of an imperialist power, and now have to deal with accusations of those who pretend to be victims when they are aggressors.”
