Guatemala Seeking to Formally Annex Sarstoon?
Is the Guatemalan Government stepping up its aggressive campaign against Belize, even before a referendum to take the unfounded territorial claim to the I.C.J. is held? Reports surfaced today that the Guatemalan government proposes to annex the Sarstoon Island as part of Guatemalan territory. The report states that the Government of Guatemala is preparing to include the island in its official map. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this afternoon, confirmed to News Five that it has not received any official correspondence from Guatemala in respect of the proposed annexation. And that while the ministry had heard about it, it has been unable to secure a copy of the said document. Now News Five has obtained a copy of a contract dated January seventeenth, 2017 in the name of Edmundo Rene Urritia Garcia. That document, in Spanish, outlines a campaign for consultations among members of the state’s indigenous coordinator. The document states the following: “Public consultation on exploration of oil in the subsoil of Belize; Proposal for a resolution on the inclusion of Belize in the official map of Guatemala and the advisability of the logistical support between the Secretary of the Navy of Mexico and the Navy of Guatemala, request of a national geographic institute related to the Sarstoon River area.” As we said, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not lending credence to the report. It says the document, originally obtained by BBN, was reportedly leaked by the Guatemalans.
It is a prop. It was intentionally leaked to cause grave concern amongst Belizeans and pressure us to choose to go to the ICJ where they await to “legally” slaughter us, with the help of the “friends” of Belize.
