Cuba Announces Effectiveness of its Two Vaccines

In COVID-19 news, Cuba says it has developed two vaccines. They claim one of them, Abdala, is over ninety percent effective, while the other Soberana Two is sixty percent effective.  While the vaccines haven’t been cleared by the World Health Organization, Cuba has administered a single dose of the Abdala to four million of its own people.  The Abdala is said to require three doses to achieve that ninety-two point twenty-eight percent effectiveness, while the Soberana is two doses.  Ambassador of Cuba to Belize Lissette Perez Perez says this is an achievement for Cuba and the wider Caribbean and Latin America.

“Cuba, two days ago, we announced that the efficacy of the Abdala is more than ninety – it is ninety-two point two eight percent. It is a very important success and we are very proud of that because it is a response to the capacity of Cuba in terms of biotechnological industries to create our own vaccines, our own medicine.  I have to tell you that the Abdala vaccine is very safe because the basement that we are using for the preparation of other vaccines and also because in the trials it has been very safe for the population that has been in the middle of studies and a lot of persons have been included. I have to also tell you that more than four million persons have received at least one dose. Cuba is testing against COVID with five vaccines but two of them are already vaccines because they have overcome the fifty percent efficacy that the World Health Organization needs for the approval of the vaccines. This means the Soberana Two and the Abala are already vaccines for the five candidates we already have two vaccines. The Soberana Two we will have a surprise soon because we have the pending results and an additional dose.  We have a good capacity of production in Cuba to vaccinate all the population. We are waiting to have seventy percent of the population vaccinated by summer and almost all the population during this year.  We have the capacity for that and also to share with the rest of the world as a result of our achievement. It is now in the process with the World Health Organization. So, Cuba has two vaccines and we are proud of that. It is a vaccine that is from the region; a vaccine from Latin America and the Caribbean.”
