The spate of brazen murders and robberies has the national psyche on edge. Everyone desperately wants something to be done to halt the madness in the streets. I, as most Belizeans, do believe this harsh penalty should be brought back. One, it will decrease the amount of criminals being brought back into our society after their jail time has been completed to commit criminal acts again. Secondly, there will be a less statistical rate of Juvenile Delinquency in our country due to the fear of the consequences of certain acts. With this punishment enabled once again, predictions are that the nation will have a gradual and consistent change in the most devastating and hard criminal acts.
after reading all the comments, it is clear that most Belizeans want their old country back. I myself am a Belizean living abroad, and know it will not do any good just to have good intentions abroad. It is time for BELIZEANS to take back the country from the criminals, and make examples of unlawful, renegades, who are wanna be thugs. We as a people have to do something before there is no future for our children in the place we called home. i agree with everyone who posted on this page. nowadays persons who are killing, raping and stealing doesn’t have no mercy on us. why should we the citizen of Belize fear them they are the ones to fear us i strongly believe in bringing back henging to Belize. the Government itself is not helping in know way. Our country is coorupt with politics crimes how can we develop, instead they are bringing us down do u know that they rest of the countries is classifing Belize as the country with high rates in crimes like the saying says “the good suffer for the bad”. I am a belizean and i am sick and tired of seeing blood on the streets of Belize every single seconds of the day. we need to come together and do something about, we should think of our children and of our children, chidrens. Yes, I strongly agree that they should start hanging people again because a lot of killing is happening and it sseem like its not going away. The way i see it the government is letting the country get out of hand because if they would step in and put the proper people in charge and stop putting people who are only trying to better themselves than the counrty things will never get better. Belize is too small for all thats happening.

I think we should definitely do something about the situation in belize, look what they are doing to our country, belize is no longer the beautiful, safe place I grew up in and it’s appalling the way the youths have no respect for life. Personally I don’t believe in corporal punishment, unless it is needed. Belize needs it, we can’t have idiot criminals running the streets like they own the place. I agree with the majority of the posters on this forum, we CANNOT allow criminals to run amok, as they have in Belize City. What is disturbing is the police and the government are doing a piss poor job at stopping it.

Hanging should definitely be executed in Bze. Although many may argue that we should give the offenders a chance to repent, criminals apparently do not appreciate this luxury. THey simply go to jail for a period of time and when they are released, they continue to do watever they want to. Going to jail is too much of a ”luxurious extravagance” for the criminals. IT’s somewhat like going on a ‘Vacation’ for them, and with the increase of inmates recently because of the rise of crime rate, they may become a burden for the government. Apparently, the life of a person is worthless to them. There seems to be no respect for the life and properties of the people, and this is caused indirectly by the “slacking-off” of the Laws of Belize. Perhaps, it is especially unjustice and unfair for those who are innocent and are murdered or raped. Hanging will increase the fear of offenders and so they will probably try to avoid any forms of illegal act. I’m not trying to say that they must repay for the life they have taken away from the victims but hanging is indeed the most appropriate method of dealing with such high level of criminal incidences in Belize, especially in Belize City.
the government don’t want this hanging system, cause they know that they do bad stuff and they just don’t want to get this system implemented and then they get screwed by it…….
the government see that crime only happen mostly to poor people that is why they don’t really care, they just pretend they care by showing they have meeting on crime prevention, in return they get votes, stay in power, collect more money, so not to live among the poor and not get dead.
No! NO! no!, hanging should not be brought back to beautiful Belize, I think laws needs to be changed, stiffer penalties for murders, life without parole, if they are not let out on the streets, then they could only kill murdererers behind bars like themselves, just my opinion.
Generally speaking, i totally do agree that the issue of the government being corrupted is becoming a considerable crisis. Knowing that the people, especially those who are poor, are being taken advantage of and not making an effort to overcome the issue definitely shows the apathetic side of the gov’t. “Dehn onli cud talk & seh dat dehn wah do dis & dat but direkli, deh noh do nutun. Sum ah deh onli cud pretend lyke deh cyaa bowt it”… So, in any case, hanging is not probably what the gov’t would bring back…henceforth, we, as righteous and just Belizeans should try to convince & recommend to the gov;t to consider hanging as a “workable” option.
capital punishment is still on the books in Belize, but the will to carry it out is not there. thos sentenced to death put in appeal after appeal, right up to the Privey Council, knowing that they won’t allow executions.
Once again, the only people who benefit are the Lawyers, and as most of the government are Lawyers, they get the pick of the cases to appeal!
The main problem is the lack of skill in investigating an prosecuting murder cases. We have a brand new Forensic Lab in Ladyville, but, apart from the person driving a silver blue plated Prado, none actually doing any forensics work! There is no central computer for sharing data, and no doubt very little will to install one, as most of the Police officers are as corrupt as the government!
The goverment should bring back Capital punishment ? because the killers come out free and back to the streets and kill more and more people and when they take them to the suprim court they get bail or the let them free and they kill again and the same happen know it is time to stand up and fit for our right for a free craim belize and we ask the goverment to impliment the capital punishment be for our beatiful juel that is Belize becomes as Guatemala that every day their is about hundreds of people killed

We take our country back by being good parents.We take our country back by electing good leaders,and most Belizeans do not want good leaders.They want a free hand out.These thugs and gansters are our children.They are not from another planet.Hanging people will not solve the problem.When you an eviroment that produce this type of behavior you could hang one and society will produce another one to take his place.In other words we have to destroy the enviroment that create our babies into criminals.They need education,jobs , and oppertunity to rise up from poverty.Remember when there is no justice there will be no peace.If man can’t find a job to feed his family he will steal, and if we have a prison system that dos’nt rehahbilate when they are release they will be worse.If the rich do not share the wealth with the poor.The poor will let you share the poverty with them. P.S I understand the poor relations between citizen and police but if it has shown that the person clear intent was to murder some(1), he or she needs their neck bend and snapped. I’m sorry folks but it’s my strong beliefs that the good shouldn’t suffer for the bad.

Yes I personally believe that they should start hanging those cruel….. there is no word I can think of that would best fit a description for them. I often wonder if they come from a human being or an animal. It is so sad to hear the amount of killing happening in Belize ( A jewel, A used- to-be peaceful country where you could have walked the streets & not be disturbed, stabbed, stolen from, or gunned down as if u though u were some sort of an animal). Mein it’s so sad! And what they do not realize is the fact that we only have 1(one) LIFE, not 2 or 3… ONE!!! Do they realize that those victims have loved ones that care for them and love them. Hi, everyone, although I am against capital punishment there are some cases in which I would recommend it highly, one of the cases that really hit me close was the brutal murder of Sandra Beltran, among others the killing of the Chinese mother still holding her child assassinated with a couple bullets, If adults could be hanged and minors given life imprisonment with no possibility of payrole that I would vote for…it sounds like if I am going to the candy shop may I have two lollipops and you pay your quarter, I wish it were that easy to get rid of murderers…once they die, you do not worry any more about them, if they keep on living we need to maintain them and I prefer killing them, than paying for their maintenance, I feel sorry for them but they chose to kill. Hanging or shooting them is ok.
It should be brought back ASAP. There are too many criminals roaming our nation.. I would say start from the top with the criminals taking advantage of our Nation and the future they are supposed to be protecting.
And while they are at it, why not re-implement full corporal punishment like we had back in the day when you could actually sleep in peace.

You need to stop being wussies and take a stand for the rights of peaceful, law abiding, respectful citizens of this Earth. Like the bible says “If a part of you is leading you to sin, cut it off.” so shall we cut these evil members from society and cast them out from amongst us.
Setting an example by reinstating the death penalty would definitely be deterrence for the current crime situation because I am sure many of the individuals who are committing these crimes don’t want to be put to death. These individuals need to understand that the law abiding citizens of Belize mean business. For those witnessing these crimes would not be afraid to testify for fear of retaliation.
Unfortunately, it’s the one bad apple that is spoiling the entire bunch and setting an example I think would straighten out the rest that were thinking about taking that route. Bring back the death penalty.
i think hanging should be brought back and i definitely agree with darlene that all prisoners should be branded in a form of way and that is see able for people to know who is who. The time they are taking for to ask these question it should have already be instated .
Hanging is not going to deter criminals because they don’t fear any consequences nor do they consider they will ever be convicted in the first place. These guys who kill so easily do so because they believe that can do so with impunity. They also have place no value on life, including their own. These guys do not go about killing thinking to themselves “I kill because the worst they can do me is lock me up for life”, they kill because they don’t care about any consequences. They kill because they don’t care about anyone’s life, including their own.
Look at how many murder cases either go unsolved or fall apart at trial. Hanging will not assist the police or prosecution. Hanging will not strike the term “nolle pros” from the scripts of the nightly news broadcasts. The only thing hanging will accomplish is to offer society a small sense of vengeance from the few murderers that are successfully prosecuted while ensuring that these killers never get the chance to re-offend.
In reality how many people would ever hang in this day and age, even if the judicial obstacles to capital punishment were removed? Certainly not enough to deter most would be murderers.

I agree with you on the fact that these criminals do the things they do because the think they can get away with it with a mere slap on the wrist and free food and boarding as their punishment. This is the reason we need to implement harsh handouts to them. If those idiots knew they would hang or shocked to death do you think they’d keep doing what they are doing? Sure it would not make a difference right away and people would still test the waters just like children always try to see how far they can push their parents even tho they got their share of punishment.
We cannot look at easy alternatives like life in jail for these people. We are talking feeding these idiots for decades on our tax money that should be used for the betterment and future of our nation.

iv heard all possible arguements on the topic but the best solution is to bring back hanging. its easy for some to come with human rights, sure we all have rights. so shall we listen to the rights of a hundred criminals for a second chance or should we listen to the rights of thousands of belizeans who want, need and deserve a better and safer Belize? lets not blame government for the crime because its the duty of all of us aswell. I work at a school in a village in the stanncreek district and i can assure you that if you heard all the monstrosities that happen in this place and all the horrible things that happen to children then many of you who are against hanging would beg for it to be back! as a matter of fact, hanging is in place in our counttry it’s just been held back because of ‘human rights.’ so if ever time arrives for our voices to be heard, lets ask for hanging to be the solution.

We must blame the Govt for the crimes.. They are the ones that have the authority to make it happen. We the people can only ask for changes we cannot make them.
Talk about crimes, why isn’t the legal system stepping up and making propositions for needed updates and changes to the legal system in Belize? What I would like see done is for all the Magistrates, Judges and private legal representatives form an NGO that will make proposals for changes in the legal system from a neutral point of view with input from the people. Once that proposal is done, they can go on live tv shows, radio shows and having community meeting describing the proposals to the masses. The most important part in that proposal has to be that no-one not even a judge or Govt official is above the law, no-one can tell a police officer how to do his job if it interferes with doing it right (politicians buying their way out of things or helping a criminal friend or relative).
This is just my 2 cents..
I believe in capital punishment and it should be brought back. Presently, there is not real deterrent to crime. Criminals look at Prison as a hotel stay until their next crime and i don’t believe that the prison is really rehabilitating its inmates. When they get out they repeat the same crimes. This system is not working and it is ridiculous that we continue to do the same things over and over again expecting different results. In other circles that is called insanity. And, in regards to human rights activists, they need to get with the program and start championing the rights of the victims and not the criminals. I believe in a fair trial and all avenues should be exhausted to ensure that we have the right person convicted. After that process is complete, if the penalty is hanging, they should be hanged. No conscience qualms, since that person did not think twice about taking a life – we as a society should not be so finicky about enforcing capital punishment. the criminals are running our town and will continue to do so unless they feel a strong consequence to their actions and i don’t mean a tv in your cell and access to a cell phone. Another alternative to suggest for those who really can’t stomach capital punishment is to assign prisoners to hard labour – we have land – let them till it. We have streets that need fixing etc. My entire point is – we have to change our modus operandi if we want to see results.
We are sending a lot of innocent people behind bars it wont be fair to be killing innocent people . The Police need to get their stuff together i mean come on why in the world did our tax money go into cameras and they are not working why police cannot solve simple robery and the police are involved in majority of the dissaperance and killing of people the system is currupt from the start Fix the police department First so we can deal with prosecution properly and the we can talk about Hanging people.
Hanging is too gruesome to be carried out. Lethal injection is humane. Institute lethal injection and DO IT. There has been no real punishment of the sons of dogs who murdered 4 of my friends. Yes, a nice older mild mannered lady like myself lost 4 friends to murder within one year. None of the incidents were related, but all four were targeted because someone was doped up and insane and wanted what they had.
