Italian minister who recently visited Belize resigns due to corruption

There was a flurry of activity last month, when the Italian Minister of Economic Development, Claudio Scajola, visited Belize accompanied by Belize’s Ambassador to Italy Nuncio D’angeri. Scajola was wined and dined and was cajoling with the Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington and his counterpart Erwin Contreras. The official side of the visit was brief but the Minister spent time vacationing at Placencia’s Turtle Inn where he left a bad whiff for taking off with one of the resort’s chefs and for leaving behind unpaid bills, including one for a lavish lobster dinner. Well trouble seems to be following Scajola. The BBC is today reporting that the Minister resigned over corruption allegations. He is accused of paying for a luxury apartment in Rome with money from a developer caught up in a legal investigation. Scajola denies any wrongdoing and says he will clear his name. According to the report, this is not the first time he has had to demit office.  In 2002 he was forced to resign from a previous Berlusconi government, when a labour minister aide who had had his police escort removed by Mr. Scajola was assassinated.

He was under increasing pressure to resign over reports that have implicated him in a shady real estate deal. This Italian minister is not the first one to be in trouble over corruption in Italy, just look at their racist and corrupt leader, they are all rocking the same crime boat.

All the experienced ministers from Italy usually retired out of shame or dignity.

Watch out Belizeans, His retirement could mean that at least one pizzeria will be popping up on Albert Street sometime soon.
