World Mental Health Day 2010; How healthy is your mind?

Jennifer Lovell

The Mental Health Association is holding several activities in observation of World Mental Health Day 2010. Today Saint John’s College, Saint Catherine Academy, Anglican Cathedral College and Edward P. Yorke high schools participated in a speech competition at the IT-VET center. The theme for this year’s activities is “Mental Health and Long Term Illness – the need for continued and integrated care”, but the speech competition was focused on violence and its link to mental health. News Five spoke to the president of the MHA, Jennifer Lovell and two of the top students.

Jennifer Lovell, President, Mental Health Association

“The kids were given the criteria for the speech, they had five to eight minutes to give a speech and they had to do their own speech. The theme was violence. That’s not the theme for this year but our theme—because the kids were more interested in what’s happening around them, we gave them the topic of violence.”

Kyle Reneau, 1st Place, MHA’s High School Speech Competition

Kyle reneau

“What I spoke of in my speech was not only that violence is something that is physical but also that putting our children in poverty is a crime and therefore it is somewhat a form of violence.”

Delahnie Bain

“And why do you think that is an important message for your peers?”

Kyle Reneau

“It’s important for us to understand that because when we put children in poverty that will eventually lead to physical violence so instead of trying to treat physical violence by itself, we should also be treating poverty.”

Jasmine Leslie, 3rd Place, MHA’s High School Speech Competition

“My speech was basically on the effects of violence on patients with mental illnesses and how it can be very traumatic to them and can actually be long term. It’s a matter that people aren’t really aware about as much as they should be so I think people should be aware about this because it’s a burning issue in our country.”

Jennifer Lovell

“We want to inform the public about issues of mental health and it’s really important for us to let the public become aware that a lot of what’s going on out there has to do with mental disorders. We want the kids to be aware because if they are aware they’ll pass it on to their parents. But not only that, the teachers come along and they are able to hear some of the information and they can pick out some of these children and instead of kicking them out of school, they can send them to the psychiatric nurse, send them to get counseling or send them off to get help.”

Upcoming World Mental Health Day activities include lunch for the homeless at Battlefield Park on October twelfth followed by MHA’s annual fundraising banquet on the sixteenth. Tickets are sixty dollars each and can be gotten at the Community Counseling Centre on Freetown Road.

There should not be a charge for this event. This should be community based to create awareness to the public about Mental Health issues. You can request donation for those who would like to make a contribution, but not charge for admissionj. Ridiculous!

  5. Jolene Smith says:

If you or anyone lives with a child that has suffereed with Mental Health Issues you know what is being said by the media is so true. If you have lost a member of your family to this illness then you will have a lot of compassion about Mental Health. It is just like having Cancer or Diabetes… Lots of pain and coping skills for the patient and the family. The family is needed to give support and so is the community in which you live………… Please pray for someone you know suffering with this very issue now and we will not let up for dignity for mental health patients in this country!!!!!!!! From the heart with experience….. You have got to know it firsthand.

  6. RadicalBelizean says:

Well done, for highlighting mental health in Belize. It is estimated that up to 20% suffer from some form of mental health condition ranging from depression to schizophrenia. Yet the problem of stigma means that people associates this problem with voodoo instead of getting the appropriate help for their loved ones.

What we Belizeans need to realise is that many people with mental health disorders ranging from anxiety to personality/psychotic disorders are able to lead a productive life with the right care. Furthermore no one is immune from an episode of mental health problem.
