Belize City Center will receive facelift courtesy Mexican government

The Belize City Center, after years of wear and tear, will be receiving a much needed facelift courtesy of the Mexican government.  The multipurpose facility was decommissioned in early September after an assessment conducted by the Ministry of Works found it to be structurally unsafe.  News of the refurbishing project follows an official visit by Prime Minister Dean Barrow to Mexico earlier this month.  During the visit Mexican President Felipe Calderon committed to the initiative and in keeping with his promise has sent a team of engineers to do a preliminary assessment of the task at hand.  According to a government press release “a city centre reconstructed or rehabilitated by the Mexican Government would also serve, quite literally, as a concrete testament to the enduring friendship between our two countries.”

Rehabilitation? Yes.A Facelift is like putting lipstick on a pig. It needs to be structurally sound so we do not end up with a disaster.

First I want to say thanks to the Mexicans and I believe that they will do a very good job they are masters of construction.

BZNinCALI I was about to say the same thing that place really needs more than just a face lift but I think that it has to be a misuse of the term facelift, maybe whoever first used the term does not really know what a facelift on a building entails.
To put things in perspective a facelift is like performing plastic surgery on a person nothing else changes but the wrinkles structurally the body remains the same.

A couple of weeks ago, Isani Cayetano did a story regarding the City Center still being used for events. Well, this is a good sign of progress planning to get things done with the Center. Now, I will not praise it, nor will I knock it; absolutely nothing has been done as yet. We cannot hear these stories and become instantly satisfied. We must remain vigilant and keep the Belizean’s Public Officials ‘feet to the fire” to make sure this project is completed and done right for the people they serve, us the Belizean People. We have no information about what will be the technical aspects of this partnership agreement between the Mexican Government and the Belizean Government. We do not know the cost benefit analysis of repair vs rebuilding and all of that. I will wait to hear more about that and this story in the coming months. Personally, I want to see the structure rebuilt and replaced with a first class sporting facility and all purpose event center! This is an opportunity. Nevertheless…….Keep their feet to the fire. Siguelo!

See what a little borderly love can do. Now what the P.M. needs to do is ask England for help in using the British Soldiers stationed in Belize to help patrol our streets along with the B.D.F. to get rid of some of these so call gang-bangers.

Junito, we discussed the problems with the city center not being structurally sound earlier this year,, the subject came up again last week. Before you throw stones at me, read what rootsman wrote. But that description was cute, I may use that. Thanks. Jeeeeeeeeezzzz.
