Get Up & Run with hundreds of free tennis shoes
The Get Up and Program has been running for three months, and today the health conscious group received two hundred and fifty tennis shoes and expect another shipment of the same amount. The participants who have accumulated two hundred sixty points in the program are being gifted a pair of sneakers on behalf of One World Running.
Zenaida Moya, Belize City Mayor
“We had been asked that yuh know, people want tennis shoes and so we said well, we’ll really need some assistance to get those tennis shoes because tennis shoes aren’t cheap, at least good tennis shoes. So I wrote a letter to Miss Ana Weir, who is the Executive Director of One World Running, based out of Boulder Colorado. I also sent her a copy of our Get Up and Run News Letter and they approved that we would be accepted to receive these tennis shoes. We feel so good to be receiving these tennis shoes. Everything will be handed out; none will be saved because this is not for anybody else but the Get Up and Run participants.”

“So Mayor, I understand the Get Up and Run Program will also be holding a major marathon on Saturday. Tell us a little about that?”
Mayor Zenaida Moya
“Yes, this first annual Belize City Get Up and Run Marathon will be held September 17th, this Saturday. While we are already registering individuals now we will have registration around 5:30 minutes to six. We will start six o’clock sharp; the marathon starts because again this is an athletic event so everything has to be done precisely. We’ll be having a 5 K race which is three point one miles, that’s two loops around the Albert Street area. Then we will be having the 10K which is four loops around the Albert and Regent Street area. It will start immediately in front of Battlefield Park.”
At the end of the marathon on Saturday, winners in the different categories will be given medals, certificates and trophies. The Get Up and Run Program is requesting that all participants with two hundred and sixty points are to report to the City Hall between eight to twelve on Friday morning to collect their sneakers.
Kudos to Mayor Moya in trying to boost the health of Belize City residents, and in her successful effort in obtaining tennis shoes for the participants. I think mayors, chairpersons and alcaldes can also do something in their area. Once again, kudos to the Mayor of Belize City.
a marathon is 26.2 miles. i would prefer a mayor who takes care of streets and drains first.
Moya… get up and run to fix the potholes in Bze city…thanx!
I think Fed has some tennis left in him, maybe a cuolpe more slams. Maybe he was struggling for motivation and this recent slump will give it to him. Yes, he’s probably past his prime but let’s not forget what players like Agassi were able to accomplish after 30. I understand Fed’s been at the top so long everyone jumps at the first chance to bury him but I’m not quite ready to do it yet. We’ll see how things play out.
