More problems for man injured by Rosewood Truck

An accident on January eighth has left Anthony Edwards incapacitated. Edwards, his wife Justina and their children were walking home from church in Jacintoville, Toledo when a truck, carrying rosewood logs, came speeding around a curve. One of the logs hit Anthony, who had just crossed the street with their infant son. The child had minor injuries, but both of Anthony’s legs were broken. Anthony was treated and released from the K.H.M.H., but he now has to undergo surgery on his right leg. According to the K.H.M.H., the operation is scheduled for this Friday and a deposit of one hundred dollars will be required. The expenses have been piling up and while the truck driver has offered some assistance, it is not nearly enough to meet the family’s needs with the breadwinner of the household hospitalized. Today Justina told News Five that they are completely broke.

“He’s kinda fine a little bit now because dehn di give ah di treatment. Ih sleep good now since from when we come een from hospital, he sleep good. But when we are at home he suffer with this pain and the fever and swelling from his toe.”

Delahnie Bain

“When did you bring him back to the K.H.M.H.?”

Justina Edwards

“Monday in the afternoon we reached at the Belize hospital right yah, K.H.M.H.”

Delahnie Bain

“And we understand that the driver of the truck is not assisting you all?”

Justina Edwards

“No ma’am. Not even he—he seh eena di news dat he give me four thousand dollars and he noh give me no four thousand dollars. I have it write down weh he give me. He di seh he give we dat and we noh even have no money right now. When he know dat we come down to Belize Monday and he not even give we wah shilling, he not even give we wah dollar fi buy something fi drink or fi get something to eat. You know how I eat? I beg di nurse them ova yah. Dats how comes I get something fi eat or somebody else give me a share of fi dehn food, dats how comes I eat.”

Delahnie Bain

“So you haven’t gotten anything at all from him?”

Justina Edwards

“Yes, that’s what I have in the book from when he come the eighth of January to when he deh up here, that’s all I get from dat time. Up to right now, he tell me he will come, he will come and assist us and help us; no help he give we.”

Delahnie Bain

“So how have you been handling the medical expenses then?”

Justina Edwards

“That’s why right now I di ask and I di beg people fi help me because I don’t have no money. If they ask me for money like fi pay fi di things that he have to take, surgery or something, that’s why I am asking because I don’t have any money for the bill or something like that. The way how he di show that he noh really helpful, ih noh di help none at all dats why I have to try fight it out to do something for my husband because I love he, I have children fi he and my children dehn need fi eat and dehn need things fi go to school. Right now my children noh di go dah school. Mussy bout yesterday, day before yesterday my children dehn noh gone dah school. I am concerned about it because I left my children, I live close to di road and I noh know weh di happen right now. And what I say, I will fight for what my poor husband needs and I will get to it because he noh di help me. So that’s why I’m asking the people fi help me, weh dehn could ah help me with you know.”

Does the driver have insurance? I thought vehicles are supposed to have insurance in Belize, or did that law get voided by the ninth amendment? I guess pedestrians need to buy insurance to protect themselves from damaging vehicles.
