2011 Human Rights Report aims at Belize
The United States Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2011 has been released. Almost two hundred countries were evaluated for human rights issues. In respect of Belize, the report highlights numerous instances in which elements of the security forces acted independently of civilian control. The worst abuse documented was the use of excessive force by security forces. In some cases the government took steps to prosecute officials who committed abuses, both administratively and through the courts, but successful prosecutions were limited in number and tended to involve less severe infractions. The government occasionally ignored reports of abuse, withheld action until the case had faded from the public’s attention, failed to take punitive action, or transferred accused officers to other districts. During the year the Belize Police Department’s Professional Standards Branch received two hundred and thirty eight formal complaints of alleged police misconduct. During the same period, the department held fourteen officers on interdiction with half salary and one on suspension with salary. The fourteen officers on interdiction were alleged to have committed a combination of criminal and disciplinary charges. The ombudsman reported receiving ninety-nine complaints against the police department and its personnel, of which thirty-nine percent were categorized as complaints for brutality, eighteen percent as complaints of harassment, and seventeen percent as complaints for abuse of power. The eighteen page report outlines other events that took place over 2011, including the detention of media personality Glenn Tillett, whom was detained without charges, for an offense allegedly committed by one of his relatives. Other human rights problems included lengthy pretrial detention, domestic violence, discrimination against women, sexual abuse of children, trafficking in persons, discrimination based on sexual orientation, and child labor.
I don’t think we can expect to satisfy the high standards of the U.S. until AFTER police have made the streets secure and crushed the worst of the violent offenders. Right now we are worse than the Wild West, almost entirely lawless. I could say Belize has returned to the feral state.
And you who voted for this pm hope you are proud of this record worse pm and gov. In the history of our great country pm will go down in history as the judas barrow of Belize.
While it is all true the USA is full of $#!% too, let’s start talking about Guantanamo bay prisoners and the enhanced interrogation techniques.
Don’t get me wrong , I have zero problems with water boarding if it’s used on CONVICTED terrorists who have been before a court of law and found guilty.
I would like to know who evaluate the USA on Human Rights and drugs trafficking. Look what they do went and kill a man in another country with military force and also they have the most illegal drugs in the world as they have high demands for it. We do have instances where there is a need for the police to act especially with gangs as i classified them as local terrorist and no compromise should be done with them. Please let us handle our own situation and is some get kill then that is what they deserve as long as it is not children.

If something is not done soon to remove the rogue elements of the government, a crises is inevitable.
@ Mcafee while we cant argue that some of your rights may have been violated,why are you saying and backing that Belize is one of the most corrupt countries on earth when you know well that the people of Belize are living quite comfortable , dont view “Belize” by viewing the actions of the city itself ,I am concerned of your wikipedia post on corruption as the entry has no data on Belize,the map clearly shows Belize in gray.
@Mcafee if Belize is so bad why don’t yu pack up and go, or are you making too much money from that lab of yours and enjoying that relationship with the minor too much. As for this report, why is it that America always want to rate other countries and not try rate themsleves. Who appointed them as the boss of the world bc it seems that they doing their yearly appraisal report.
