More students needed to study pathology
Medicine is a hot career path in which the competition is brutal. But the pathology profession in Belize is not meeting the demand. Doctor Hugh Sanchez, whose schedule is always booked, says that the country needs at least three more persons to pursue pathology studies.
Dr. Hugh Sanchez, Pathologist
“I am the pathologist and the police work and the hospital work aretwo different work. The police have their own examiner and I do the work for the hospital and the country of Belize.”
Jose Sanchez
“So when people complain and they say but you are here, they are wrong because it’s not you?”
Dr. Hugh Sanchez
“No. I have my work to do; which is pathology; which is the diagnosis for cancer and other diseases for the whole country of Belize. I have my work to do. So when I work here is when the Ministry of National Security solicits my input when Dr. Estradabran goes on leave. That has been in place for the last five or six years.”
Jose Sanchez
Would you say there is need for more young people for this field?”
Dr. Hugh Sanchez
“Of course, of course, we need at least three more.”
Jose Sanchez
“How do you go about engaging young people to say you know what this is a field that you should encourage them? How do you do that?”
Dr. Hugh Sanchez
“We do that when we have our career day at the different schools. They would invite me to go and give presentation; that’s one way of sensitizing and bring awareness to the field and to give encouragement to the youths.”
how much Nicaraguan and Cubans doctors has Pablo Marin brought in and given work permits displacing Belizean doctors. there is no job security in this field. successive goverments prefer the foreign doctors because they do their bidding. PUP brought in the plane load of cuban doctors and UDP is flooding the hospitals with Nicaraguan doctors. look at the minimum wage in both of these countries. there is no long term plan to develop belizean human resource. No Vision, No Plan so the horror stories will continue
Does EVERYTHING have to be political?
YES- Belize needs more than 1 ME for the whole country!
I know a very promising young man who had secured himself a scholarship in the Caribbean to study Forensic pathology. All he asked from the Ministry of Education and Health was for them to continue paying at least 80% of his salary so that he could help himself while abroad. However, typical of Belize, he did not have the right shape or skin color nor did he come from the right race or even the right part of the country. Therefore, he was denied the opportunity. Imagine the lack of vision on all of their part considering the times that we are living in.
It is no wonder that Belize will never progress beyond it’s third world or developing country label because not even the leaders are sensible enough to make better decisions. I live for the day when people can truly earn a job or any position that is not based on color, race, economic status, political affiliation etc.
good luck my
good luck my BZE people
