Belizean athletes at 2012 Olympics
Turning to London 2012, a lavish celebration of the world’s many cultures and the athletic prowess of its people, officially got underway last Friday with a festival of colors during which each participating country paraded its flag at the opening of the Summer Olympic Games. It is the biggest and most important global sporting event being hosted for a third time in the United Kingdom. The climax of the inaugural activities included the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron, fashioned from two hundred and five copper petals representing the competing nations. Team Belize, made up of three of the Jewel’s finest in track and field and judo, is taking part in the competitions. On Sunday, Belizean martial artist Eddermys Sanchez fell to Miklos Ungvari of Hungary during the elimination round of the men’s under sixty-six kilogram tournament. Sanchez, seen here wearing a white gi, was defeated by a score of one to nothing during the nineteen second bout, advancing Ungvari to the semifinals where he won a silver medal. Olympic runners, twenty-six year old Kaina Martinez and twenty-four year old Kenneth Medwood, also representing Belize, are scheduled to compete on Friday in the women’s hundred meters and men’s four hundred meter hurdles, respectively.
Win or lose, it’s a great achievement to represent the Jewel and compete on the world stage. They should all be proud, I am proud of them and their efforts.
19 seconds?
Mario Mendoza, Sonny Meighan, Fred Evans, Ben McKoy to name but a few are all Belizean athletes that over the years have represented Belize in international sports. Did they make it? How did they do? Those are not the questions to be asked. The question is when will Belize rise to competition level?
Look man. Black Belizeans are as strong as horses (oh boy, here comes the criticism) thus our speed, strength and endurance abilities are superb. So why are we so miserable at sports?
Belizeans cannot expect to train three months before an international event and expect to qualify. See what happened to Sanchez at the Olympics, he was used as a floor mop.
Belize needs permanent sports programs that are government sponsored. When?
I’m still proud of Eddermys for competing in the Olympics. It takes a lot of self-confidence and skill to get to that level of play. Good going; maybe next time.
WTF…who’s your daddy?????…ans- “Miklos Ungvari” 19 second!!!!!!!!….jeeesss….what would have happened to you in one minute????…
I am in total agreement with uncle Benji.
sending a Cuban to represent Belize, what a joke.
WHEN WILL BELIZEANS START TRAINING THEIR OLYMPIANS FOR AT LEAST A YEAR OR TWO??????.
19 Seconds.
WOW! That must be a world record.
I agree with Uncle Benji and Vicky. My son is a born Belizean-American, he is heading to college on a full track scholarship, he even broke record at his high school. He is very dedicated to track, he works out every day, yes that includes Sunday also. Snow, sleet, nothing will stop him, it has to come from the heart, the coaches are behind you 100% but it has to be something you want..Three months is a joke, that what it takes to getting fully tone for the summer, not to compete in the olympics.
