Lord Michael Ashcroft appointed to Privy Council at large
Lord Michael Ashcroft has been out of the news in Belize for a while but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been busy. The news out of London is that earlier this month, Lord Ashcroft was appointed to the Privy Council in the UK. For many years the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council was Belize’s highest court of appeal prior to our adoption of the Caribbean Court of Justice. Lord Ashcroft will not serve on that committee but on the Privy Council at large. The Privy Council advises on the exercise of prerogative powers and certain functions assigned to the Queen including affairs of charities and companies who are incorporated by Royal Charter. Appointment to the Privy Council is for life. The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, also appointed Lord Ashcroft as his Special Representative for Veterans’ Transition. According to a press release from the Ministry of Defence in the UK, Lord Ashcroft will be working with all government departments in the UK to ensure that British military personnel get the support they need when making the transition to civilian life.
