Foreign Minister Elrington headed to meeting in Guatemala

Wilfred Elrington

A meeting will be held in Guatemala City this coming Monday between Foreign Minister Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington and Harold Caballeros, the Guatemalan Foreign Minister. The announcement was made today by the office of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington. According to a release, “the coordination with authorities from Belize and Guatemala has been completed for a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the two countries, in the presence of the chief representative of the OAS.”  It will be the first face to face meeting between the two ministers since last week’s diplomatic crisis when Guatemala threatened to close the border and expel Ambassador Fred Martinez. Following the threat by Guatemala, the Foreign Minister recanted and withdrew its protest note. On Tuesday on departure from Belize, Elrington told News Five that tensions have been diffused. But here at home, social activists have been calling for Elrington’s resignation for being too soft on Guatemala. The recent case of compassionate pay to the family of a Guatemalan farmer, who was killed by a Belize Defense Force soldier in the Ceibo Chico area of the Chiquibul, has brought further pressure on Elrington.  As for the upcoming meeting, it is noted that it will not be held on neutral grounds but in Guatemala City giving the impression that Guatemala has the upper hand.

The office of OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza referred to a meeting between Prime Minister Dean Barrow and the president of Guatemala, Otto Perez Molina. While the meeting has been reported in Guatemala, it remains unconfirmed in Belize. The OAS remains concerned about the postponement of the meeting between the leaders of Belize and Guatemala because “there has never been an obstacle for the realization of the bilateral meeting, as he, (the secretary general) has been constantly willing to postpone other commitments to go where the governments of Belize and Guatemala deem convenient and on the date on which they agree.” The venue for that meeting has been reported as the Adjacency Zone and the purpose is the launch of the campaign on whether or not to take the referendum to the International Court of Justice.

Since Sedi thinks the border is artificial, maybe he can appease the Guats just by moving it a few miles to the east. Then the gold fields will be in Guatemala, problem solved!

  2. Lucas says:

Elrington, cause he does not deserves to be called Mister much-less honorable, may be an intelligent and knowledgeable person but, certainly lacks wisdom which is the ability to apply lives experience to daily living and, prudence which is the ability to know when, where and how to excercise wisdom. He has given ample prove that the only thing that exceeds his lack of wisdom and imprudence is his own ego. He is afraid that if Guatemala closes the border it will hurt business. Whose business?. The business that UDP big-wigs conduct with Guatemala. For example the Vegas and the Espats that live in Benque. If the border is closed, it will hurt THEIR TURN to get rich. He said that we cannot compare ourselves with Gautemala in the diplomatic arena. We Belizeans think he is talking of himself because Assad Shoeman, Said Musa, Lisa and even his boss, EL CALVO, always out-manuevered the Guats. He says that we cannot compare ourselves with Guatemala militarily. In this he is right for instead of developing and expanding a well organized, well equiped and well discipline BDF, the UDP is cleaning the national coffer and which is well documented by the general auditor. This man is a disgrace to the country of Belize and an offence to Belizean patriotisim and nationalisim. He should thank his lucky star because circumstances have been favorable to him. We can make many mistakes. On the other hand, he cannot afford one mistake for if he makes one but just one mistake and he is out.

  7. Young Gial says:

Ayayay mein, this is even more complicated as it develops. If the OAS is giving away money to criminals who knowingly trespass with the intent to use weapons and ammunition against our soldiers who are doing their job to protect and defend, then might as well pay the guatemalans to just come over when they feel like. The OAS is just as bad in this initiative and I get the feeling they are more afraid of Guatemala and might even lobby to please them with the ICJ as things develop. I don’t trust Elrington, I don’t trust OAS and I don’t trust ICJ. I pray that God will pave the right passage for Belize and that our Lord, the only one I trust, will bring justice to our people. Because our God is a just and righteous God, and no one but Him can set us free from victimization.

  8. Belizean Pride says:

erlington needs to be removed from this post i agree with cola and let him know that we Belizeans are really upset about his way of dealing with problems cause by guat and later we Belizeans have to pay them for their trespassing from our tax money.

  9. Cruffy says:

I need to hear from the Loyal and Patriotic Order of the Baymen and this issue, where is Mrs Pitts Robateau, where is Ms Emma. they only hate Guatemala under a PUP administration. where is there support for Sedi’s feeble and anaemic position.

  10. goodguy says:

How about we send a bill to the Guatemalan gov. for compensation for all that Guatemalans have stolen from us: millions upon millions of our xate palms, precious mahogany and other tropical woods, gold, wild animals end even our endangered mackaws, not to mention all the lives and property that their bandits have taken over here in our land. How about compensation for those Belizeans killed on the ‘other side’? How about they pay for the rather free education that Melchorennos are reciving in our primary schools and high schools in the Cayo area? What a wimpy and spineless government we have to be allowed to be ridden over by our neighbour to the west. We will eventually have to do something ourselves since Sedi and our GOB do not seem willing and ready to to take on their responsibilities.

  11. N.C says:

are these things really happening in our country
its a shame….why should they be compensated? the man illegally entered our country!!!im sure the belizean man that was murder in Guatemala…how much did his family receive?????????butr because its a belizean defense personnel that did this…they want compensation???//this is just ridiculous!!!
where are the people that call themselves leader???/why aren’t they taking a stand against these injustices occurring in our country!!!!

  12. canefarmer says:

an enemy gets killed and the government pays. when they shot dead Gutierrez a cane farmer, there was no compensation, there was no compassion for the wife and his five children. to this day the little ones are starving and unable to go to school.

now we have compassion for the enemy?
    what nonsense is this?

  13. Nimbo says:

INVISIBLE BORDERS WILL ONLY BE SELLING US TO GUATEMALANS….

SINCE WHEN DO WE HAVE TO PAY A THIEF FOR STEALING FROM US??? ONLY THIS GOVNT MEIN!

CENAIDA WAS RIGHT ..DEM NO HAVE NO #@$$
