US Networks converge on Ambergris Caye

Martin Savidge

John McAfee was a technological pioneer not only for his brand of antivirus, but also because one of his companies, Tribal Voice, designed one of the first instant messaging programs. Since McAfee’s disappearance has caught the attention of the international media, Ambergris Caye has been visited by journalists from CNN, the Associated Press, Thomson Reuters, ABC, and NBC. CNN has sent to Belize, correspondent and anchor, Martin Savidge who has accumulated nine Emmy awards, two Edward R. Murrow Awards, and six Associated Press Awards amongst other awards. Savidge has made several live reports from the sands of San Pedro about the incident. News Five has teamed up with Savidge and his photographer Martin Calloway. Earlier today, News Five Jose Sanchez spoke to them both on the significance of the media coverage of McAfee and the impressions about Belize that have been broadcast to the millions of worldwide viewers during the search.

Martin Savidge, CNN Correspondent

“First of all it’s an absolutely gorgeous place and there’s a lot of natural beauty to it. Even when we are up at three o’clock in the morning and doing all of our multiple live shots that we had to do. To watch the sun come up over the ocean and just see the beauty of your country is magnificent. Beyond that people everybody from when we first arrived at the airport to even now have been nothing but welcoming. The law enforcement officials may not have been the most forthcoming, but that’s their nature; that’s part of their professions. There is no obligation that they have to tell us everything and I think the officials have been good to us. I think working with you as a fellow journalists; working with the likes of Channel Five and all the help that your station has provided has been a tremendous asset for us. It’s been a great cooperative effort and I think that we still have a fascinating story to be told and it remains to see how this is going to play out.”

“Very simply way of living around here as opposed to being back home where there is a lot of hustle and bustle and everybody’s trying to make the big money and drive the latest and greatest. Here is just very simply; people walk on the beach to work or ride a bicycle to school—very simple. So sometimes that is a very important part of life; just be simple.”

  1. Uncle Benji says:

Welcome to paradise. As Belizeans, we want to thank the foreign press for their kind words about our people and our beautiful country.

All you so called Cruffy Americans……………. take note. Come back home and live the good life. Remember, America needs your talent and your strength, once you get old, you will be pushed aside like an old canal fart.

Do you know how many old Belizeans live in New York City with nothing but rats for companionship? Take a walk down Featherbed Lane or down there behind Yankee stadium, the majority of trash diggers are old Belizeans…….. just waiting to die. Go over the bridge to Brooklyn, and its worse.

  2. Eye in the Sky says:

The big money and drive the latest and greatest is what the tourism minister has on the mainland with his tinted windows 250 thousand dollar Land Cruiser Prado.
The friendliness is just a show as San Pedroanos hate tourists but need to make a living.
The minister of tourism hates tourists and the prime minister hates all white people.

Stay away from San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.

  3. In a hurry says:

I do not trust McAfee. But I trust the government of Belize when it counts.

Like those times when you got a plane load of people who need quick Belizean passports.

Using the corruption website, passports, drivers licenses, ambassador privileges, and birth certificates can be quicly arranged. Whether it be one Hezbollah agent, or thirty screaming jihadis in a sacred hurry to get to heaven, the corruption website can accept gold or MasterCard, delivering genuine documents, no questions asked at a moments notice. Planning a major terrorism event? Don’t wait in line, couriers are standing by.

On a tight budget? Consider a criminal vacation package. Enjoy indefinite Belize residency, Be sure to buy Can’t-Be-Extradited insurance, guaranteed to cover all legal government, and kickback expenses, now including Interpol can’t touch me baseball caps. Made in the shade.

  4. Unc;e Benji says:

@Eye In The Sky……….. I usually don’t people to task, but you my friend……. you are an exception. Are you a Belizean? If you are, why do you knock the country the way you do?

Are you trying to be a flamer on this blogging site? You are not going to succeed. You call yourself eye in the sky, but based on your posting style, it is more like Eye Up Your Ass.

As Belizeans we may be PUP or UDP or something else. But in the face of foreigners, we have to be united simply as Belizeans. The next time I check into these blogs, I expect to see a post of apology from you for being such an asshole.

  5. Nole says:

The Belizean people are so welcoming because they ALL WANT YOUR WALLET, AND AS SOON AS YOU ARE BROKE THEY WILL LET YOU LEAVE!! Crooked mofo’s in a beautiful spot. I have been 15 times and know the routine very well.

  6. Elgin Martinez says:

@NoelSo why do you keep going back ? there must be something good in my beautiful Jewel.Furthermore why would you commute to a place as much as 15 times if all the people their wanted is your wallett.Your statement makes no sense.

  7. Vuk says:

I absolutely agree with “Uncle Benji” on both of his posts in this thread, especially the second one.

  8. Someonewho knows says:

It is clear to see what is going on here. A millionaire who hates the corrupts police visits 2 different police stations 2 days prior to allegations being surfaced and makes substantial donations to police. Even though he is of the opinion that they want to kill him. this is just Mc Afee’s ways of trying to make us as a people adore and bow to him. The GSU raid he so speaks about was only after his media blitz of donating equipment and weapons to OW police. In the same way only days before his latest media frenzy he was again on the news donating to San Pedro Police. The Police Department on the other hand because of the crime rate sees this a a welcome donation in a time when the budget is cut. He is exploiting on the needs of the country to try and get a “Get out of Jail free pass.” He is not aware that in order to become exempted from criminal liablility he needs to file to become a foreign Sovereign or diplomat, or file for the post of G.G. So ironic and sadistic when when ones financial holdings are more than a countries Police budget. He donates with the belief that the good will outweigh the bad. So sad, this is Belize we will take from you and then punish your illegal actions. He calls the police corrupt because he thought he was buying them. Think you need to make bigger donations McAfee.

********************* Suggestion to Mc Afee, pay the Belize superbond payment and you will be granted Diplomat status, that way you will fully be exempted from criminal liability. Means one can break any law in public and have no actions taken againsts him *****************.

Belize might be corrupt but it is home and we naw go sell out.
