Venezuela President Hugo Chavez passes away
Hugo Chavez
President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, died today after a long bout with cancer. The very vocal and powerful Chavez was diagnosed with the disease last year, but his government had kept the gravity of the medical situation under tight wraps. His condition had steadily deteriorated since a fourth surgery in Cuba in December of 2012. Venezuela has been an ally of countries in the Caribbean including Belize, which benefitted from cheaper fuel through the Petrocaribe agreement which allowed the government to pay a portion of the cost while a portion was allocated to fund social programs. In addition, over four thousand Belizeans have benefitted from Mission Milagro, a social and humanitarian program providing free surgery to Belizeans with visual ailments. It is not known at this time how the death of Chavez will affect the implementation of these programs, since a successor will not be named until new elections are held.
A charismatic, visionary, intelligent, determined, and strong leader passed away…
Hopefully, Belize has one some day

I could have been a bigger fan of Chavez if he did not tie some of his financial generosity to buying political influence in Belize and elsewhere, such as buying our UN votes. Foreign support of our political campaigns should be a crime, both for the donor and the recipient, and it should be enforced harshly. It should disqualify a politician here from holding ANY office, because it means his loyalty to our nation is for sale.
I actually like to visit Venezuela because it has a lot of naturally beautiful places, but living conditions there declined very obviously during his tenure. Instead of elevating the poor, he made things equal by knocking down the productive working class, so almost everyone is equally poor. Wrong direction.
I hope Belize doesn’t accept that path toward “social justice.”
So sad that comandante Chavez has left us, I think that his greatest achievement was in the integration of the region. For those who say he wasn’t liked in Venezuela, I invite you to watch the news and see how the people in his country have come out to say ” Hasta siempre comandante”.
The problem I have with Chavez is his tendency for communism and the way he implemented it on his people. Communism allows leaders to take the money of everyone and distribute it more equally. Now for the poor (which are the majority) it is a great idea but it really is not. It takes from the hardworking and gives to the less hardworking aka bums.The business people from venezuela were literally wiped out because of him. Good riddance I say as a businessman.

Unfortunately his social programs cost his country dearly Venezuela is one of the most underdeveloped nations in the region because when you give everything for free you create a depended society and cannot invest in its crumbling infrastructure and with all things that are free it is not sustainable Socialism never works its very romantic to believe it does but it never empowers the people. There is never an investment in entrepreneurship and self empowerment putting the power of the nation in the hand of the people it only creates centralized power without any possibility of opposition or oversight. Chavez hand a foot on the neck of all opposition or anytime or anyone that did not agree with his ideology many journalist were thrown in jail for reporting corruption and nepotism. Imagine only one news station or news paper Controlled by the Barrow administration. That’s what Venezuela is.
