Reporter
“News came from her long time friend and colleague, Lord Bell who is on the line now. Clearly a sad day for old friends like yourself and she passed away this morning we understand.”
Lord Bell
“Yes she did; she died following a stroke this morning. It is a very sad day indeed.”
Reporter
“Has she been ill for some time?”
Lord Bell
“She had been in ill health for some months yes.”
Reporter
“Presumably you have seen her a great deal over the years since she left office.”
Lord Bell
“Yes I have, with great regularity.”
Reporter
“And how did you find her then?”
Lord Bell
“She got older and she still had times when she was like her old self but most of the time she was in frail health in recent months which happens to all of us.”
Reporter
“Indeed it does and this will really be a day when people will look back on her career. Her own website talks about it being one of the most remarkable of modern times. And you worked with her very closely didn’t you? and I think particularly people think of the 1979 election campaign.”
Lord Bell
“Yes I worked wither from the very moment she became leader right through until she resigned and she was the most extraordinary woman. It was a great privilege to have worked for her and even greater privilege to have lived in a country which she ran because she ran it very well.”
Reporter
“How do you think she will be remembers?”
Lord Bell
“She will probably be remembered as the greatest Prime Minister we’ve had. I don’t think we will ever see the like of her again.”
Reporter
“And a particularly sad for everyone in the Conservative Party…”
Lord Bell
“Yes I think it is. She left her mark on the Conservative Party in a big way. She was a very dedicated conservative; she believed in conservative principles and she believed in principles and that’s probably the thing that puts her apart from virtually every politician nowadays. She believed in those things and carried those things out.”
The British High Commissioner Pat Ashworth will discuss her life on Open Your Eyes on Tuesday morning. And a book of condolence will be open at the High Commission in Belmopan from Tuesday April ninth until Friday April twelfth from nine am to eleven am for those of you who wish to pay tribute to Thatcher.
I agree, she was a great world leader of the twentieth century. Single-handedly she restored Britain to much of its former respect and power, not to mention pulled the country out of a financial downward spiral.
We have much to learn from her example and wisdom.
Pray that one day Belize can have a leader such as she was rise to power!
RIP to a great statesperson.
