President Obama and PM Barrow heading to Costa Rica

Prime Minister Dean Barrow is heading to Costa Rica to join Central American presidents for a regional meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama. It is Obama’s second stop in the region; earlier today he arrived in Mexico City for meetings with President Enrique Pena Nieto. Top on that agenda was border security and trade matters, but immigration reform is a priority for both countries since Obama and Pena Nieto support normalizing the status of some six million Mexicans living illegally in the United States. Obama will move on to Costa Rica on Friday where he will be meeting with the Central American heads. Economic issues will be discussed as well as the security issues and immigration.

According to a recent report, ninety-nine thousand migrants from Central America were arrested in 2012 for attempting to enter the US illegally through the porous Mexican border. And it is estimated that due to the transnational drug trade, four of the six most violent nations in the world are in Central America. It is not known if P.M. Barrow will be having bilateral meetings with any Central American president. We do know, however, that Guatemalan President, Otto Perez Molina, will be in the line-up in Costa Rica.

@WOW: Obama’s history? Does ANYBODY know it? He’s spent millions trying to make sure nobody can discover his past — I wonder why? If you can answer just 2 questions, it would allay a lot of my doubts about him: [1] he says he went to Pakistan in 1980, WHEN U.S. PASSPORTS WERE BANNED THERE. What nation’s passport did he use to enter? [2] does his application to Occidental College or Columbia University say he is a foreign student or an American student? I don’t care too much about it, we have enough headaches here at home — but I can’t help thinking the people in the most powerful nation on Earth got hoodwinked into electing a foreigner — what a joke! It’s happened before, elsewhere — Germany elected an Austrian named Adolf Hitler.
As for how this meeting affects us in Belize, I’m not holding my breath for anything useful from it. Our little English-heritage nation is always overwhelmed by the rest of the Spanish-heritage countries.
We could be an anchor for regional alliance with the USA [and reap lots of financial benefits] if we had an honest government, because the Americans are always trying to invest in partners in intelligence and security. But we need to have a record of trustworthiness, especially in the security forces, and we don’t have that today.
